International Day of Older Persons

Media Release

30 September 2013

International Day of Older Persons

Arthritis New Zealand Chief Executive Sandra Kirby urged people to remember those older persons close to them on Tuesday 1 October, as we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.

The United Nations' International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on 1 October. This year the World Health Organization (WHO) has drawn attention to topics such as ageing populations and the provision of adequate healthcare; volunteer work; social care; and ways to be more inclusive of older people in the workforce.”

“Arthritis must be included amongst these issues. Although arthritis can strike at any age, older persons are still the most affected, especially by osteoarthritis. Of the 530,000 New Zealanders who are living with one or more forms of arthritis, half are aged over 65.”

“But regrettably, arthritis is still trivialised, and not treated as the health priority it should be. And many people older just people put up with the pain of arthritis, because they have been told 'it’s just arthritis'. With the right diagnosis and treatment, most people with arthritis can continue to enjoy life to the full. People who want information about how better to manage their arthritis should call 0800 663 463.”

Internationally there are many countries working to create arthritis friendly workplaces. Arthritis New Zealand calls for employers to consider options that helps maintain valued employees.

“So this International Day of Older Persons, please remember those older persons close to you who are living with arthritis, and how we can help ease their pain,” Ms Kirby concluded.
