NZ Medical Association welcomes Health Committee report

New Zealand Medical Association welcomes Health Committee report

The New Zealand Medical Association is delighted with the scope of recommendations made by the Parliamentary Health Select Committee in its report on improving child health outcomes, released today.

“In our Health Equity position statement (2012) the NZMA called for stronger leadership from the Government in championing child health and wellbeing,” says NZMA Chair Dr Mark Peterson.

“The Health Committee has recognised this by asking for an effective whole-of-government approach for children, with an integrated approach to service delivery and a particular focus on early intervention.

“The economic and societal value of making a positive difference early in the life of a child is clear. And setting the desired health outcomes within the broader picture of education, housing, parenting, income and other factors makes it clear that the recommended ‘whole-of-government, co-ordinated action plan’ is vital to the future well-being of our children – and our society as a whole.

“We look forward to working with the Government on implementing the 130 recommendations – the most impressive set we have seen in a long time.”
