Whanganui nurse honoured

Whanganui nurse honoured

Whanganui nurse Barbara Hammond was honoured for her long service to the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) at an awards ceremony in Wellington last night.

NZNO president Marion Guy presented the award, “I can’t think of a more worthy recipient for this award. Barbara has been an effective member and delegate for over 20 years.”

In the 1990s Barbara was an enrolled nurse at Jubilee Hospital in Whanganui. During her time there she worked hard for a collective employment agreement and was a staunch defender of workplace rights.

Later Barbara lobbied for enrolled nurses to have the ability to upskill to become registered nurses through UCOL. She sought the support of other enrolled nurses in the region and successfully introduced the course which was a momentous success. Registered nurses are still trained in Whanganui.

Barbara went on to become a registered nurse herself, and continues to be active in NZNO groups and activities.

Marion Guy says, “Barbara has a passion for the students and promotes NZNO. She commits her own time to advocating for nursing, promoting NZNO and speaking with students. I am privileged to be able to take this opportunity to thank Barbara for her sterling work over the years.”
