Second edition of Nursing Scorecard
Second edition of Nursing Scorecard
Increasing the number of Maori nursing graduates is critical for addressing health and workforce inequalities for Maori.
The first Responsiveness to Māori Nursing Students Scorecard (the Scorecard) was published in 2012 using data collected from the 2010 reporting year. It was designed to provide a system-level picture of the responsiveness of schools of nursing to Māori undergraduate students using existing datasets.
This 2nd edition builds on the previous methodology using data from 2011. It also includes information collated from Schools of Nursing on academic and pastoral support strategies in place to support Maori nursing student achievement.
Publishing the Scorecard is a means of promoting and monitoring performance and the achievement of tertiary education providers. The information is designed to be shared with whānau and potential students so they are well informed about each provider’s performance outcomes as part of their selection process.
Project sponsor Denise Wilson points out that a rating system has not been created in the “Instead we have shown the results for two years worth of data for each school – so the schools are compared to their previous performance.
“In the 2nd edition of the Scorecard we have restated and expanded on the limitations of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) data used to compile the Scorecard, and the fact that the TEC data is based on data submitted by each tertiary institution. At present, this is
the ‘best’ source of data for a national picture.”
She adds that the team e has worked alongside colleagues from tertiary education to ensure the accuracy of the results.
Project member Ngaira Harker says a third edition is not planned.
“Instead changes to annual reporting requirements by the Nursing Council of New Zealand will collect similar data directly from Schools of Nursing which can be used to make these comparisons. We look forward to seeing improvement in the quality of the data in the future.”
