Subject: Northland Youth to Showcase Art Skills
Northland youth will have an opportunity to showcase their creative skills this month at the Common Room Graffiti Art Competition.
The theme of the event is wrapped around Sexual Health and Well-being for Youth with the aim of promoting the ‘Common Room’ Facebook page - a space where youth can access sexual health information.
In the lead-up to the event, staged at the Cafler Park Rose Gardens, entrants must submit their design, from which eight finalists will be chosen to create on the day. Once completed, the public will have the final say on the winning piece through voting on the Common Room Facebook page with the winning artist receiving a Samsung S5 mobile phone. Voters also have the chance of winning a $50 voucher from Red Rat.
Northland DHB Sexual Health promoter Bronwyn Morunga says another aim is to show how youth with talent in graffiti art can take part in events and have their skills recognised.
“Graffiti art is often associated with damage to property and this is one way of changing that.”
The event starts at 10am on Saturday January 31 in Cafler Park Rose Gardens, outside the Whangarei Youth Space, and voting on the winning art piece closes at 5pm Monday February 2. The winner will be presented with their prize at the Youth Space on February 3.
The event is sponsored by Inferno, supported by the Whangarei Youth Space, the Whangarei District Council, and the Mai FM crew will also be along on the day with giveaways.
Northland DHB will be using the winning art piece for promotions and the remaining seven finalist art pieces will be offered to youth organisations for display.
Entry forms can be found at Inferno or Whangarei Youth Space and these must be in by 12pm Friday January 30. For more information, go to the Common Room Facebook page.
