Hospice Awareness Week – 18-24 May 2015
Hospice Awareness Week is coming up (18-24 May) and Hospice North Shore is urging residents to support the cause. The good news is that it can be as easy as taking advantage of the huge bargains to be had at one of their shops across the North Shore or having a cuppa with a few friends.
“Hosting a Hospice Cuppa is fun and we make it as easy as possible,” says Community Fundraiser Carol Herbert. “And anyone can take part.”
If you have two hours to spare, Hospice North Shore needs volunteers to hand out information and to collect on the street during the week.
Other Awareness Week events include the annual open home and garden at Devonport’s Peace and Plenty Inn and a concert by the North Shore Male Choir.
“Hospice Awareness Week is a significant time in our calendar,” says Hospice North Shore’s Chief Executive Jan Nichols. “As well as running our crucial fundraising appeal during that time, many people hold events to support us. And we also take the opportunity to share a few of the less well-known facts about our services.”
For example, did you know that the majority of Hospice service and care takes place in people’s own homes? “It’s a common perception that Hospice is a place where people come to die,” explains Jan. “But it is so much more than that: Hospice is a philosophy of care.”
Hospice North Shore provides physical, emotional and spiritual care for its service users, with services ranging from medical and nursing assistance to counselling, social work and support groups.
Last year Hospice North Shore looked after nearly 750 patients and needed to raise over $7,000 a day to cover the cost of the care they provide. “Demand for our services is constantly increasing,” comments Jan Nichols. “We are always looking for effective ways to increase our fundraising to keep step with that demand.”
