Warriors in Paradise Raise $1718.10 for SCBU
Wanting to give something back to the team who helped care for their new baby is what motivated Shelly and Nik Jessop from Bay of Islands Lee Gar Gym to host a kick boxing event, known as Warriors in Paradise.
Shelly said "Our baby was born with breathing difficulties and stayed in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), Whangarei Hospital, for a week and, during that time, we became aware that a money donation box had been taken".
So they decided to go back home and fundraise for the unit, bringing together an event that was bigger than Ben Hur.
"All the local business helped to support it and people came from around the country, making it one of the biggest fight cards in Northland", offered Nik.
Presenting a cheque for $1718.10, staff were overwhelmed at the generosity of the couple and their community.
Merophy Brown, SCBU associate clinical nurse noted how nice it was to know that people appreciated their work.
"We are focused on the best outcomes for our babies and I know all of the staff really appreciates your kindness and extraordinary fundraising effort".
"We feel very fortunate that Shelly and Nik have chosen to give so much of themselves to give back to our unit".
The donation will be used to provide wool for our knitting groups who provide the hats, booties, and jackets that we donate to families in need or to purchase blankets which we will also donate to families.
