Southern DHB’s deficit – is it time to clear the slate?

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) cautiously welcomes the announcement that a commissioner may be appointed to run Southern District Health Board.

“Good relationships between governance, management and staff are essential in the running of a complex organisation like a DHB. We hope that if the Minister of Health does replace the board with a commissioner, relationships will be prioritised,” says NZNO chief executive, Memo Musa.

“We encourage the Minister to make a decision and move quickly. A drawn out process will not assist the DHB to move forward.”

“We would also urge patient care to be the focus of every decision made. When money is the focus it is too easy for patients and the people who care for them to be side-lined. With a looming deficit of $27 million we fear for the health and lives of the geographically spread, largely rural population of Otago and Southland if cuts are made to public health services.”

“We see no way a $27 million deficit, that is predicted to grow to $42 million over the next year, can be ‘brought under control’ without affecting delivery of safe and high quality public health services, and the health of thousands. Is it time to clear the slate?” asks Mr Musa.
