Health sector opportunities for students

The West Coast District Health Board is again offering its commitment to the next generation of health tertiary students with the 2015 West Coast Health Scholarship and Studentship Awards.

Award facilitator Marion Davis says the awards are offered to any New Zealand tertiary students who are studying in undergraduate health-related careers and have at some stage resided on the West Coast.

The “scholarships” are 20 grants of $500 each for a student who is currently enrolled as stated above. Five of the 20 scholarships will be available to students with Maori or Pacific Island heritage.

The four “studentships” each comprise a six week supervised project-based experience placement with the West Coast DHB, from 16 November to 24 December this year, earning the student $5000 gross. One of the four studentships will be available to students with Maori or Pacific Island heritage.

“This is a great work experience opportunity for students,” West Coast DHB General Manager Grey/Westland Mark Newsome says. “The projects they might be working on are hugely varied – that’s a very real taste of what working in rural healthcare is like.”

Projects last year’s studentship winners worked on included Information Services Group initiatives; setting up consistent adrenalin kits for all Coast general practices and clinics; recording stories about Grey Base Hospital; reviewing the use of some clinical resources; and posing as secret shoppers of health services.

Applications for the studentship awards close on 31 August and for the scholarship awards on 30 September.
