Highest nursing honour for Christchurch nurse

Christchurch practice nurse Leanne Lloyd received the New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s most prestigious award at a ceremony in Wellington last night.

NZNO kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku says, “Leanne’s passion for women’s health stems from her mother dying from cervical cancer and wanting women to have a positive experience and feel comfortable during their smear tests."

Leanne is keen to share her knowledge and mentor nurse smear takers on the Māori perspective of cervical screening. She is an inspirational role model and at the 2012 Hui ā Tau in Poneke presented on “Community base mode of nursing care”.

Leanne is passionate about working in the community and is not afraid of a challenge; in 2012 she established her own Independent Nursing Provider Service.

Leanne has had a broad knowledge and experience in primary care including cervical screening clinics, health promotion, breast screening enrolments and support to mammography.

Amongst many other things, Leanne provides a support service for young mothers with new or second children under two, including medical support, social support and advocacy with government agencies and support with whanau.

Leanne is an active member of NZNO and its Rūnanga, and has played an important role within the health settings by supporting and encouraging nurses.

Kerri Nuku says, “Communities just wouldn’t function as they do without the hard work and passion of people like Leanne. I am pleased to have this opportunity to thank her for work and commitment to our organisation and to nursing.”
