Weaving Wananga focuses on Maori mums
Weaving Wananga focuses on Maori mums, 16-17 October,
Tutereinga Marae, Te Puna.
A two day wananga at Tutereinga Marae, Te Puna, will encourage Maori mums to adopt safe sleeping practices by using the flax sleeping pod known as the Wahakura.
The Wahakura is the country’s first Maori safe-sleeping device developed by the Nukutere Weavers’ Collective in Gisborne in 2006. The wahakura has a traditional forbear in the porakaraka, a similar pre-European structure slung from the rafters.
As well as learning how to weave wahakura, Maori Mums will hear from a range of health professionals about best care for baby.
