Forum spotlights Māori nursing development

The Chief Nurse of the Ministry of Health, Dr Jane O’Malley, will speak at a national nursing workforce development forum in Whakatāne on Thursday (5 November).

Nurses, health professionals and nursing students will attend the one-day forum to look at Māori nursing development within the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The national forum is being hosted by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, which delivers a Bachelor degree in nursing and a bridging course to the nursing degree at its Whakatāne campus.

Dr O’Malley provides advice on nursing to Government and helps to develop, implement and evaluate Government health policy. She also provides professional leadership to the nursing profession and works with nurse leaders, professional statutory bodies, professional and staff associations and unions, DHB Chief Executives and managers, and the voluntary and independent sectors.

Her keynote address is entitled: Celebrating and exploring Māori nursing workforce development.
Local presenters include:

· Kirsty Maxwell Crawford (Ngāi Tai, Tapuika, Ngāti Pukeko), former CEO of Te Rau Matatini and Nursing lecturer for Te Ōhanga Mataora Paetahi Bachelor of Health Studies (Nursing) and Ako ki te Wānanga bridging to nursing, who will speak on national Māori workforce development;
· Pareake O’Brien (Ngāti Awa), of Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngāti Awa (Ngāti Awa Social and Health Services) and Te Kaunihera o ngā Neehi Māori, who will speak on nursing workforce development , leadership and nurse practitioner pathways for Maori; and
· Ngaira Harker (Ngāti Kahungunu), Director of Nursing for Ngā Manukura o Āpōpō Advisory Group, who will speak on the nursing programmes Te Ōhanga Mataora Paetahi and Ako ki te Wānanga Bridging to Nursing, as a solution to the Maori Nursing workforce needs.
