Mindfulness pioneers, Joel and Michelle Levey from Seattle will be visiting Auckland next week to give a seminar on mindfulness for health.
“The seminar is expected to interest doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals as well as the general public,” says organiser, Goodfellow Unit Director, Dr Bruce Arroll.
The Leveys will discuss how mindfulness, meditation, mind-fitness training, and contemplative science, can benefit health practitioners and patients alike.
“Mindfulness is now one of the cornerstones of emotional wellbeing based on neuroscience and psychological research,” says a senior lecturer in mindfulness and compassion, Tony Fernando from the University of Auckland. “It has been found to be an effective treatment for chronic pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and multiple chronic conditions.”
The Leveys offer a unique and rich blend of insights and experience distilled from 47 years of intensive contemplative study/practice. Their work aims to introduce mindfulness into higher education, medicine, and business.
They have acted as advisors for British Parliament’s recent ‘Mindful Nation UK’ report and share authorship of several books, including 'Living in Balance: A Mindful Guide for Thriving in a Complex World'; and 'Mindfulness, Meditation, and Mind Fitness'.
The Leveys share experience in leadership and contemplative science through many different roles including as clinicians in medical centres; corporate trainers/consultants working with leaders and executive teams around the globe; mindfulness and meditation; mentors to leaders in government, business, medical, and military arenas; and faculty at universities around the world.
They have wide experience of mindfulness in many care settings, including at NASA, Google, and the World Bank.
The free seminar organised by the Goodfellow Unit at the University of Auckland, is on Monday 23 November, from 7 to 9pm at the University of Auckland’s Engineering Building, 20 Symonds Street, Auckland. This event is free, but organisers are asking for a koha to help cover costs. Parking is at the Owen G Glenn Building Carpark at 12 Grafton Rd.
