Why are we paying more for an easy-open cap on medication?

GSK are being asked questions related to the price of their two products that are marketed primarily to ease arthritis pain. Both products, Voltaren Osteo Gel and Voltaren Emugel, contain exactly the same ingredients, but it appears consumers are paying an additional $9.66 to have a cap that is easier to open for those with arthritis.

“Many consumers, including those with arthritis, struggle with opening items and while consumers are prepared to pay a premium for accessibility, the $9.66 in our view is exorbitant” said Arthritis New Zealand CEO Sandra Kirby.

Accessible packaging is an ongoing issue for people with arthritis in New Zealand. Arthritis New Zealand commends GSK for recognising the issue. We encourage other companies to invest in accessible packaging as a good business practice, but urge them to be realistic about the additional costs”.
