Forum to improve health outcomes for people with disabilities

Experts and community members will come together next month to share experiences and knowledge, and discuss how to further improve the quality of health services for people with disabilities in the greater Wellington region.

Hosted by Capital & Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa DHBs – and the sub regional disability advisory group – the forum will be held on 3 June in Silverstream. Minister for Disability Issues Nicky Wagner will be keynote speaker for the day.

“These forums are an important opportunity for people living with disabilities, and those working in the disability sector, to share their views and experiences,” said sub regional disability advisory group chairperson Margaret Faulkner.

“It allows them to share information and develop strategy to further improve access to health services across the Capital & Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa sub region.”

The three DHBs and Advisory Group are guided by the sub regional disability implementation plan ‘Valued Lives: Full Participation’, which was developed in 2013 and encompasses the views of people with disabilities in the sub-region.

“These discussions give insight and direction on how to address issues facing those with disabilities, their families and their support people. Theoutcome will inform our work to improve health outcomes, and enhance quality of life, for people in our communities,” said senior disability advisor Dr Pauline Boyles.

“Around 150 to 200 people are expected to attend. We’re looking forward to the discussions that will be had there, and to work together to improve health outcomes for people who experience disability in our communities.”
