Pacific female doctors honoured

The Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) congratulates five Pasifika female doctors who will be honoured as Fellows of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners this Saturday at an award ceremony in Auckland.

Dr Monica Nua (Samoan), Dr Aumea Herman (Cook Is Maori), Dr Justine Mesui (Tongan), Dr Malia Lavemai (Samoan) and Dr Heidi Muller (Samoan) will be recognised after years of service, study and training in the College’s General Practice Education Programme.

“What a great achievement, not one but five Pacific female GPs” says Pasifika Medical Association Chief Executive Mrs Debbie Sorensen.

“We are also very proud to mention that Dr Aumea Herman was a former Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) Executive Member and Dr Monica Nua, Dr Justine Mesui and Dr Heidi Muller are members with long association with PMA over many years.”

“It’s extremely important to recognise the contribution of female doctors in the medical practice and to recognise the unique contribution that Pacific female doctors make to NZ and the Pacific healthcare service.”

“We hope this achievement will inspire the next generation of Pacific doctors, nurses and health leaders in the Pacific.”

“Our PMA 20-year anniversary conference on 24-26 August will be an occasion to celebrate these successes by our members, with the opportunity to support each other in our quest for excellent Pacific health policy, service delivery and practice in the New Zealand and Pacific region.”

“It’s a real opportunity for our Pacific health community to get closer, work together and celebrate these great achievements,” says Mrs Sorensen.
