Alzheimers Wellington is out and about in September

September is World Alzheimers Month, and Alzheimers Wellington has events coming up in the next few weeks that highlight all the services we offer for everyone affected by dementia in the Wellington region.

“We have so much going on, with activities ranging from our fascinating workshop on Dementia, Sexuality and Ethics this Wednesday to our Memory Walk along the Wellington Waterfront on Sunday. And on the 21st and 24th we will have over 300 volunteers collecting for our street appeal,” said Anne Schumacher, Alzheimers Wellington Chief Executive.

“While all of this is happening our Community Workers will continue working directly with clients throughout the Wellington region; in fact, one of our social groups for people with dementia is visiting Parliament tomorrow.”

Around 60,000 New Zealanders currently have dementia, and that number is expected to rise to over 150,000 by 2050, so it is vital that people affected by dementia know what support and information is available to them.

“We have definitely seen a rise in the number of people needing our services. In 2015 we had over 1000 clients, and over 400 new referrals. It’s a staggering number, but we want to make sure that the people in our community with dementia, and the family and friends supporting them, live well, feel empowered and have caring, professional, dementia-specific services available to them,” said Ms Schumacher.
