Health Industry Big Day Out opens doors into Northland health sector
Wellington, 20 October 2016 – Today over 40 subject teachers, deputy principals, careers advisors and co-ordinators will get a unique insight into the numerous career opportunities available in the Northland health industry, as part of Careers New Zealand Health Industry Big Day Out, in partnership with NorthCATE and Kia Ora Hauora.rthland health sector.
Northland Regional Council economist Darryl Jones will start the day-long event by sharing industry trends and predictions on job openings in the health sector.
“The health care and residential services sector currently accounts for about 10 percent of filled jobs in Northland, and over the last five years the number of jobs in the sector has grown more than three times as fast as employment in the Northland economy as a whole. Out to 2020, an additional 2,000 job openings are forecast to occur in the sector”, says Darryl.
Throughout the day, educators will hear from a range of students and young practitioners in the health industry about their experiences in the sector. Representatives from NorthTec, Whakapiki Ake, AUT, Massey University and Career Force will also discuss entry requirements and different pathways into health.
“Helping educators to assist their students to make informed career and subject choices is an important part of the Careers New Zealand education to employment strategy and an integral goal of each Industry Big Day Out,” says Careers New Zealand Education to Employment Engagement Manager Jennifer Ross.
“We want young Northlanders to see that there are multiple pathways into the health industry, some of which allow them to study and work without leaving the region. Northland has significant untapped potential and there is a real need for our talent to stay here or return to the area and contribute their skills and knowledge to the region once qualified”, adds Jennifer.
“Health is one of the nationally significant industries that have been identified as being key to New Zealand’s economic growth. Careers in health also rest on some of the government’s prioritised subjects – science and technology in particular,” says Careers New Zealand’s Chief Executive Keith Marshall.
Northland District Health Board, Manaia Health PHO and Kia Ora Hauora are in attendance to engage with educators and showcase opportunities for young Māori in the health sector.
Industry Big Day Out is a Careers New Zealand national initiative connecting employers, industry and educators to provide students an insight into the real world of work and the range of pathways available within key industry sectors.
