Call for more mental health support following quakes

Canterbury psychotherapists call for more mental health support following quakes

Press Release

New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists (NZAP), Canterbury Branch

6th December, 2016

The New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists Canterbury Branch is concerned about the emotional wellbeing of the people of Kaikoura and throughout Canterbury following the recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. From our experience with the Christchurch earthquakes, we know that the internal turmoil caused by events like these can continue long after the ground itself has settled. For many in the Canterbury region these earthquakes will awaken old anxieties, and for those still battling with insurance and EQC claims will add additional stress to circumstances that are already challenging and in some cases overwhelming.

We encourage those who have been affected by the quakes to seek support from those around them and not to try and cope with the impact of these events alone. Psychotherapist Jayne Hubble said "We know from experience that if people can talk about what they are going through with someone who listens and understands, that they will be better equipped to deal with the ongoing challenges of the situation". Psychotherapists throughout Canterbury are well suited to provide this support, and for those living in rural regions who do not have access to local therapists or counsellors we encourage people to make use of the telephone counselling services that are available.

We also urge the government to ensure that funding is available to enable those affected by the quakes to access timely and appropriate mental health support. "Lack of available support can create heightened anxiety and stress, and so it is crucial that those affected by these events are supported to get the assistance that they need", said Christchurch-based psychotherapist James Driver.

Those seeking support can contact a psychotherapist here: http://nzap.org.nz/nzap-register/
