Update on measles case in Wellington

Regional Public Health was notified on Thursday 25th May of an adult with measles in the Wellington region. Since then, no new cases of measles have been identified. We have not been able to identify where the person got measles from, the person had not been overseas nor been in contact with anyone with measles.

We have followed up with 58 people who were identified as friends, work colleagues or belonging to a sports team. Most people could confirm they were protected from measles as having had two doses of the measles vaccine after 12 months of age.

Measles is a serious illness which can be prevented by being immunised. Immunisation is free and given to children at 15 months and four years of age. People who may not be protected from measles include, people born between 1969-1980 as at this time only one dose of the vaccine was given. In 1991-1996, a second dose was given as part of a school catch up programme however, not all children may have got the immunisation. People born between these years should check with their doctor that they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine.

The measles vaccine is safe and effective and the best way to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease in our community. A case of measles is an important reminder for people to check with their doctor if they are fully immunised, and get immunised if they haven’t been, or are unsure.

Symptoms of measles
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Sore red eyes
- A red blotchy rash that starts on the face and neck before spreading elsewhere
