Highlights of Spokesman's briefing for Friday, 24 September
OCHA went to Baucau by road today.
A joint
investigation into the murder of journalist Sander Thoenes
is being carried out by the TNI, the
Indonesian police
and INTERFET and is being monitored by UNAMET CivPol.
Yesterday UNAMET carried out a visual reconnaissance of
the western part of East Timor -- Maliana, Liquica, Suai,
Ainaro and Same areas. The overall view is that there are
very few people living there. Maliana and Suai are almost
totally burned and houses in Ainaro are still burning.
Dili is quiet today.
The fourth Special Session of
the Commission on Human Rights is underway in Geneva to
discuss the East Timor crisis. (The opening statement by
Mrs. Mary Robinson, the High Commissioner for Human Rights,
was made available at the briefing.)
The Asia group at
the Geneva meeting expressed "strong reservations concerning
the procedure by which the Special Session has been
convened".
The European Union has drafted a resolution
asking for an International Commission of Inquiry.
The
Special Representative, Mr. Ian Martin, is travelling to New
York today.
CivPol Commissioner Alan Mills will be
officer-in-charge of UNAMET in Darwin and Brigadier Rezaqul
Haider continues to be officer-in-charge in East Timor and
designated official for security in East Timor.
