An Italian, Gaspare Checchini, has apologised for emailing nearly 250 people in the Cook Islands late last month asking for help in locating an Atiuan dancer.
She was a member of very popular Te Tupuna Korero troupe that toured China last month.
Checchini sought a helping hand from Cook Islands' accountants, a supermarket, the Catholic Church, an airline, an on-shore bank, an off-shore bank, dive operators, the sports and Olympic association, a trucking firm, Rotary, tourism people, the Alliance-Francaise society, the Atiu mayor...even the weatherman!
He was also keen to follow up on information about Atiu island and how he can keep in touch with artists, musicians and dancers from of Atiu.
However following a Cook Islands News article on his search, published Thursday 28 October, Checchini has emailed back to all those concerned with the words: "People of [the] islands. Please forgive me for that email."
He said "We were just friends in China. It was only my stupid imagination. A[n] illusion. She want only my friendship, nothing else."
"Now I disappear from your lives. I wish you all the best for the future. I'm sorry!!! And please, be friendly and good with her, it was my mistake, she's innocent. Goodbye," Checchini said. - AJS
