Fairfax Widens Melbourne Assault
* IAN CROWTHER and NEIL COLLYER, Fairfax Community Newspapers chief and Victorian State Manager, look set to widen their marketing initiatives in Melbourne with an extension of their network to the lucrative Mornington Peninsula area. Competitors say Fairfax appears certain to enter head-long competition as the Frankston and Mornington Journal against the Independent News led by Dolphin Publishing's MD FELIX GANDER, Editor TONY MURRELL and Ad Man BRIAN HYDE. This will include a large scale pitch for Peninsula real estate advertising using the Fairfax House & Land brand. The market currently also includes JOHN GANNAN'S Flier fortnightly, and the long-time Frankston Standard and Mornington Leader titles under GENE SWINSTEAD'S Leader Group. The Independent Group, based at Hastings, includes editions in Chelsea, Frankston, Hastings, Cranbourne, and The Mail at Mornington and Rosebud. Ma
* Last year FCN took over five titles from PETER BOYLE'S Post group in the eastern suburbs; and TONY CERANTONIO'S Western Independent. FCN is also seen by media observers as front runner to soon takeover the APN News and Media Melbourne stable of CAMERON O'REILLY, headed by BRIAN STAGMAN: Melbourne Times, Emerald Hill Times, Bayside Southern Cross and City Weekly.
Gannan's Colorful History
* JOHN GANNAN started The Flyer newspaper around 1989, with various full-color fortnightly Frankston, Peninsula, Westernport, 'Southern', Dandenong and Sunday editions; as well as The Sports Flyer including a racing formguide edition for some time. Gannan enlisted the support of ex-Leader Media Group Financial Director MALCOLM MURDOCH for a while; Gannan declaring Bankruptcy in 1996, with PAUL PATTISON of Ernst & Young as Trustee. The paper subtly changed name to The Flier, to be published by Bidara Pty Ltd, headed by JOHN BRAZATIS. In recent months, Gannan's name has returned as Publisher/Editor to the paper which has been printed under contract variously by PETER ANTHONY at Rural Press Ballarat; BRUCE ELLEN at the Latrobe Valley Express Partnership in Morwell; and ADEN CARTER at Harris Print (Burnie, Tas.).
* JOHN GANNAN commenced as a Marketing Cadet at Maroondah Associated Newspapers group, headed by DON BROWN of Leader, in 1978. In the early 1980's, Gannan started his own Independent Mounteasterly weekly based at Ferntree Gully, against Leader's Knox News. The Mounteasterly was printed variously at CHRIS FISHER'S Westernport Printing, DERN LANGLANDS' Royale Press, and the HORNIBLOW BROTHERS' West Web Printers at Geelong. The masthead was purchased by JULIAN CLARKE, now MD of The Herald & Weekly Times Ltd but then GM of Standard Newspapers. It was re-badged as The Knox Standard, with Gannan employed as local branch manager, and current Seymour-Nagambie Advertiser Publisher KEITH PEPLAR assisting. Australian Securities and Investments Commisison records show that in May 1988, John Gannan and his brother JAMES GANNAN were banned and disqualified for five years from holding office as Co
Melbourne Suburbans Shake-Out
* FAIRFAX'S moves will have impact on a number of Melbourne suburban papers:
* GEOFF LEVINGSTON sold his Dandenong Examiner to FELIX GANDER'S Independent Group. It has up to 50 per cent of its content as 'sell-through' from the Independent's other papers. This is likely to diminish as NEIL COLLYER'S Dandenong Journal would now have a Frankston sell-through corridor.
* BRIAN STAGMAN'S Melbourne Times has been removed from the Fairfax and Associated Community Newspapers 'Mel-Buy' network, to be replaced by the Melbourne Property Guide of The Age. Any deal between FCN and APN News and Media would be likely to further freeze out Metro News published by GLEN ROHAN and NEIL MURDOCH. Metro News, currently at 40 pages, is reportedly shoring up funds for 2000-01.
* ERIC BEECHER'S Melbourne Weekly is soon to re-launch itself as Melbourne Weekly Magazine. It is currently running at 96 pages, whilst competitor CRAIG MARSH'S Inside Melbourne logged in last week with 48 pages ... complete with Page 3 sex industry ad opposite the Editor CAROLINE KELLY'S column. Weekly Publisher ANTHONY McDONALD is openly boasting that his publication will return a $2.2 million profit for 1999-2000.
Text Media To Float
* JOHN SINGLETON'S future involvement in ERIC BEECHER'S Text Media Group is uncertain, as the company appoints J B WERE & CO to manage its float, as early as September. LUKE COLLINS of The Australian Financial Review says the group could be valued as high as $55 million. About $10 million is hoped to be raised in the float. A float propsectus is soon to be issued, and company executives are abiding with regulation that does not allow their comment on the exercise.
'J O'D' to head 2CBA-FM
* JOHN O'DONNELL is to join Sydney's 2CBA-FM as Program Director, leaving a similar position at Southern Cross Broadcasting's second Melbourne station, Magic 693. GREG PRETTY of Squawk, the Christian Broadcasters' bi-weekly journal, says this is 'J O'Ds' first venture into Christian radio, and quotes 2CBA Station Manager PHILLIP RANDALL to say the appointment is 'strategic in moving the station ahead in where we want to go'. John has one of the best voices in the business, and will be remembered by some in the 'Rocktober' days of 'Much More Music' 3XY. John once told Media Flash that his father had been a bookmaker and he had witnessed much heartbreak of the gamblers. He was firmly against further on-air Casino promotions. Media Flash Publisher ASH LONG says: 'John O'Donnell is one of the beaut blokes of Australian radio, and we wish him well.'
Your Early Media Flash
* MEDIA FLASH is this week dispatched ro arrive at your desktop on Saturday, June 24. Early publication is because of TV filming commitments in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland by ASH LONG MEDIA'S Sydney Report and Brisbane Report TV programs. Some of the stops include Mount Buffalo (Vic); Bororen, Malanda, Port Douglas, Bedourie, Horn Island, Cloncurry and Blackall (Qld). 'We shall return' ... but there will be a delay in answering E-Mails over 10 days. Next issue of Media Flash is due to you around Wednesday, July 5.
Passing Of Ron Casey
* RON CASEY, Melbourne TV and radio icon, died on Monday night, aged 72. He had been a General Manager of HSV-7, but also well known to the Melbourne viewing public through his co-production of World of Sport with DOUG ELLIOTT, BILL COLLINS and LOU RICHARDS. Large public tributes have been paid to Ron Casey by Seven CEO KERRY STOKES, his board, and the Channel's management and staff. Casey started as a junior at the Herald & Weekly & Times Limited's 3DB radio station, also working at Channel 7 from its Olympics opening in 1956. Many tributes have come from sporting and football clubs including the North Melbourne - Kangaroos Football Club. Racing man JACK ELLIOTT called him 'Australia's greatest ever sporting commentator'. Former GTV-9 boss NIGEL DICK said: "Never before has one person commanded the respect and love in so many walks of life." Casey will also be remembered for his st

Local Media Cops Unpaid Bills
* TONY RHEAD of The Western Advocate (Bathurst, NSW) reports that media outlets were amongst those caught by the collapse of GREG EATON'S company promoting the Bathurst Easter Motorcycle Festival. The debts of Event Management Specialists total $1.7 million including: Bathurst Broadcasters Pty Ltd, $1500; BRIAN NIGHTINGALE PROMOTIONS, $4000; JOHN ARCHER SIGNS, $11,115; Midwest Radio Pty Ltd, $1050; Prime Television Southern, $2500; RJ Signs, $5850; Western Broadcasters Pty Ltd, $1110. Major creditors include Tourism NSW, $250,000, and Bathurst City Council, $220,000. RENE RIVKIN has been approached as a possible investor for a reworked company.
GST: Newsagents Unhappy
* TONY PROWSE, Circulation Director of The Herald & Weekly Times Ltd, appears to have upset some Victorian newsagents with news of increased cover prices, but reduced margins, for some of its newspapers. From Saturday (July 1), the Monday-Friday Herald Sun will have a cover price of 99 cents; Saturdays, $1.20; Sundays, $1.40. The Weekly Times will be $1.30. 'You will notice that in the case of our Saturday and Sunday publications and The Weekly Times, both newsagents and the publisher take a marginal reduction in net revenue,' says Prowse, in the Friday (June 23) fax to newsagents. 'That reduction is offset by the extra one cent gained by newsagents for single copy retail sales in their newsagency, Monday to Friday, where change cannot be given to the publisher.' 560,000 copies a day, by that one cent unofficial 'rounding up', equals more than $2 million for FYE 2001.
Murdoch Magazines' New TV Show
* HARVEY SHORE, Pay TV and TV Writer for Media Week, breaks the news in the June 26 issue that MATT HANDBURY'S Murdoch Magazines will launch a new TV show and magazine project, Live This, on the Ten Network. The brand 'will be a down-market version of Marie Claire Lifestyle, aimed at young homemakers aged between 25 and 39'. STEPHEN TATE will produce the TV program; TRUDI JENKINS is Editor of the print version.
Book Department
* GORDON WOOLF of The Worsley Press (Hastings, Vic.) is launching the Third Edition of his book, How To Start And Produce A Magazine Or Newsletter. The 168pp book sells at $35 plus GST, and promises 'everything you need to know to write the text, sell the ads, design the pages, prepare the artwork, have it printed, sell the copies and make a profit'. Mr Woolf writes: 'Dear Ash, The enclosed book is obviously aimed at the newcomer to publishing. I hesitate to suggest that there might be many among your Media Flash subscribers who could learn from it. On second thoughts, I don't hesitate to suggest that at all ...' www.worsleypress.com
Mary Ryan's 'In Receivership'
* JULIE THOMSON, publicist at Brisbane book-seller MARY RYAN'S, writes: 'As you would know, Mary Ryan's has gone into receivership, awaiting sale later this month. I am leaving the position of Mary's publicist and promotions manager, sadly this week, but may continue to do publicity work for them, albeit under a new owner, at some future date ... I have loved my time with Mary Ryan's passionately and I thank you for any help and support you gave me in performing what I call my 'dream job'.'
Public Relations Watch
* THE PUBLIC RELATIONS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA (ACT) is presenting a one-day seminar for the Communications Industry on July 5 at the Hyatt Hotel. Speakers include Special Minister of State, SENATOR CHRIS ELLISON; Media Watch's PAUL BARRY; ABC broadcaster GERALDINE DOOGUE; LAURA TINGLE of the Sydney Morning Herald; FRED BRENCHLEY of The Bulletin; GLENN MILNE of the Seven Network; and STEVE LEWIS of the Australian Financial Review.
Your ABC
* GAIL JARVIS becomes the ABC's new Director of Television under MD JONATHAN SHIER'S shake-up. SUE HOWARD is Director of Radio, a division to be re-established, which will include Radio National, ABC Classic FM, Triple J, NewsRadio, Radio Australia, local and regional services. She will be assisted by LISSA McMILLAN, RadioNews Network Editor. LYNLEY MARSHALL will be Director of New Media.
Air Waves
* JAYNE DULLARD, of 3RR, writes: 'My imminent departure (for overseas)prompted me to resign from my 3RRR program, The Body Politic. the station's new program manager, ex-Sydneysider CHRIS PEKIN, responded by pulling the plug on the show just hours before it went to air last week. A little rough, methinks, on my co-presenter, Monash Uni political historian and bloody good guy, DR PAUL STRANGIO. We expect this kind of beahvior at commercial and ABC outlets, but it's quite out of line at a community broadcaster, where the program manager is just one member of a program committee which is supposed to make grid decisions via a formal and quite lengthy process. Triple R has been around for more than two decades and, apart from its own valuable existence (providing as it does a forum for unusually 'free' speech) has an important feeder role in Melbourne radio (Danger Low Brow; Lawyers, Gun
TV Guide
* BRUCE GORDON'S WIN-TV subsidiary, Crawford Productions, is joining with Canada's Protocol Entertainment and America's Lancit Media to produce The Saddle Club for cable television. The title is the number one horse book series on the market, especially for girls aged eight to twelve. Producer LYNN BAYONAS says The Saddle Club is 'the perfect vehicle' about pre-teens and their love of horses.
* MARG DOWNEY (Fast Forward) and STEPHEN CURRY (The Castle) have been signed by Red Heart Productions to star in Ten's new sitcom, Sit Down Shut Up. HARVEY SHORE, Media Week's TV writer, reports in today's edition that other crew members include JACQUELINE BRENNAN, CHRIS BROWN, JODIE DRY, PAUL GLEESON, TAYLER KANE and BRENDAN REED.
* ANNA PINKUS, 3AK's breakfast co-host with JOHN BLACKMAN, debuted last night (Sunday) on Seven's new Street Mate half-hour series. In each of the 13 episodes, 'Pinky' takes a desperate and dateless subject wandering through town looking at faces in the street, approaching some, inviting them to a romantic dinner.
So, This Is Showbiz
* FRANK REED, Staff Development Manager at Rural Press, was guest speaker for the Parkes Forbes Excellence in Business Awards, reports the Parkes Champion Post. His career has included stints at the Hawkesbury Gazette, Windsor Courier and The Land (NSW).

* ROSS 'ROSSCO' HUTCHISON, described in Penrith Press as 'television's original HUMPHREY B. BEAR and the original FAT CAT', has been honored as a 'Community First' Credit Union awardee. These days he is president of AIR-FM 100.7 community radio.
* BRUCE MANSFIELD announced on his 3AK afternoon shift that his daughter LOUISE KINGSTON has presented him with a grandson, SAMUEL. It was a big week for Bruce, who registered a fast 0.4 rating for his first month on air: estimated peaks of between 2000-4000 listeners at any time.

He was GRAHAM PERKIN Journalist of the Year in 1982, and had been Editor of the Sun Herald. One of his first jobs was at Australian Associated Press in the 1950's. An anonymous obit. in Thursday's Age said: 'During the 1990's, the long years of travel, hyperactivity and hard living began to tell on Smark's health. He resigned from full-time work in 1995, but continued writing weekly columns until 1998.'

He says it might be OK to use the logo on the The Magic of Murrindindi, Mist Of The Mountains book, but not on the organisation's letterhead: '(It) takes away from the unique image which has been developed over the past five years through this symbol.'

Editor's E-Mail
* EVAN HANNAH, of the PNG Post-Courier writes: "Ash, Thanks for the latest issue of Media Flash. We at the PNG Post-Courier are always grateful for publicity which shows PNG has a strong and vigorous media. Unfortunately the latest reference to us was just a little off the mark. The staff members who publish Post-Courier Online are ALLAN LONG and RAWA STOI. The design is down to KEN BURROWES (soon to leave us for Townsville). The reporters of the story were our Parliamentary team, led by WALLY HIAMBOHN. My only role as 'Net genius' is to advise on the site's look and to provide the technological backbone to allow the whole thing to happen ... hardly a serious claim for the title 'genius'. Still, any mention of PNG media is better than none at all! Lukim yu, Evan Hannah."
Fan Mail
* DAN ZIFFER, Editor of Communique, a Text Custom Media magazine for Microsoft, writes: "I'd just like to congratulate you on your Media Flash column. It's thorough, and covers a wider scope of media than other outlets. So thanks for giving us such a good read.'
* MEGAN LLOYD, Chief of Staff of Messenger Newspapers, on the other hand, appears angry that we had an opposing view to that of her Chiefdom (Media Flash, June 19): "Please take our E-mail address of (sic) your circulation list. Your product is shite!!!"
Flash Points
* Fairfax CEO FRED HILMER'S 38-minute presentation to the World Newspaper Congress was made by video. It's worth watching on the Net at fxj.com.au ... another product out of f2 is Age Managing Editor MALCOLM SCHMIDTKE'S daily 60 seconds of what's happening at The Age. What's next: Editor MICHAEL GAWENDA presenting the weather?
* LOUISE DE MARTIN, President of the Gosford District Chamber of Commerce, presents a novel idea in BOB STAINES' Central Coast Express Advocate: a number of select groups such as senior citizens, school aged children, business owners and service organisations are given a camera and told to take six photos of what they like about Gosford, and another six photos of what they don't like. A remarkable 'photo audit' and an excellent newspaper promotion.

He neglected to mention the cost of Media Flash.

* DAVID EVANS of 99 Rowntree St, Balmain (NSW) writes: 'Dear Ash, Congratulations - I've only been a subscriber to your newsletter for about six weeks, but even in that time it's gone from strength to strength.
