SCOOP, Olympic Update, Monday 18 9 00
Article: Mathew Loh

LEADING Olympic highlights on Sunday were three more world records in the pool and two swimming golds to USA but none to host Australia. Leading the US charge in the pool was a great swim by Tom Dolan who can rightfully claim the title as the world's best swimmer with his gold in the 400 metre individual medley.

For New Zealand, Commonwealth Games cycling heroine Sarah Ulmer gave Kiwis something to smile about after the disappointment of the dressage and triathlon when she qualified for the semis of the woman's 3000 metres individual pursuit.
Unfortunately Ulmer was outclassed in the semi-finals but will be satisfied with her effort to earn a chance for a bronze medal in a clash with a British opponent tonight.

Meanwhile legendary women's softball pitcher Gina Weber came within minutes of leading the New Zealander women to a famous early victory over arch-rivals Australia.

However, despite almost pitching a perfect game to lead the WhiteSox to a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 10th - Weber was disappointed to see one of her pitches slammed out of the diamond to give the hometown favourites a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

But while losing isn't easy the performance of Weber was hugely inspirational and should motivate the White Sox to greater heights throughout the Olympic tournament.
