BREAKING NEWS

Skase Is Crook

* SEÑOR CHRISTOPHER SKASE, dodgy type and former Seven Network proprietor, is going through the latest episode of PIXIES at the bottom of his garden. His latest medical sham over supposed stomach lining cancer, tends to show the only medical attention he requires is a backbone transplant. SKASE'S claims to be penniless were blasted out of the Spanish water with JAMIE WALKER'S Weekend Australian revelations that an $8 million Puerto Andratx property is owned by Blue Bayou SL, publicly linked to son-in-law TONY LARKINS. The Woz reporter had real estate agent CARLOS NAVA admit that SKASE is the ultimate owner. Top quote goes to AMANDA VANSTONE, attributed in CHRISTINE MIDDAP'S News Ltd syndicated article: 'He's got nothing and I'm MARILYN MONROE.'

It's A Shame, Derryn ... A Shame

* DERRYN HINCH returns to prime-time radio this morning (Monday), in a head-on stoush where Melbourne's struggling 3AK wants to take it to 3AW, fronted in the important morning time-slot by NEIL MITCHELL. It has been more than 15 years since HINCH fronted the Melbourne morning microphone (at AW), before departing on his TV 'Magical Mystery Tour', and various comeback attempts in Sydney, Adelaide and on the web.

The new logo at the web-site (above),

and a different new logo (below) in the press.

* HINCH has decided to cut into part of the breakfast market, with an 8am-11am shift, against MITCHELL'S 8.30am-12 Noon time-slot. If anyone can do the job for 3AK, it would be HINCH. But the former top-rater has been virtually left to fend for himself, with basically no publicity for himself or the station's new 1116 frequency which cranked up at the last-minute at the weekend. Press promotion to date is a solitary quarter-page ad on Page 26 of the Sunday Herald Sun.

* GREG FLOOD, Station MD, has just arranged a new part-owner for 3AK in Data & Commerce Ltd, headed by former Seven Network MD KEITH CAMPBELL. But when this edition of Media Flash went to press on Sunday afternoon, the station's web-site had not been fully renovated. The metaphor is scaffolding around the theatre on opening night.

* MEDIA FLASH, an unabashed HINCH fan for his embrace of radio theatre, sent DERRYN an e-mail wishing him well, congratulating him on a package that includes 3AK shares. We hoped that he could repeat a scoop in snaring CHRISTOPHER SKASE for a first-day interview.

* HINCH replied to us: 'Thanks for the message. Doubt SKASE would talk to me again and I don't pay for interviews. For the record, they didn't give me shares. I bought them out of my super fund.'

Media Icon Returns

* RHONDA does it in South Australia and Queensland. KELLY used to do it for The Tele in Sydney. Now 'ICPOTA' is set to return on January 28 to be the 'face' behind newspaper classified advertising in Melbourne. An updated animated 'ICPOTA', originally created for The Age in the 1970's by SYLIVA BRADSHAW, will return to press, radio and TV advertising from later this month. 'ICPOTA' ('In The Classified Pages Of The Age) will have a younger profile, and will use youth radio stations (FOX-FM and MMM-FM) to build paid lineage sales. This includes live crosses to the newspaper's Spencer Street headquarters, with Age Classifieds showbag giveaways on Fridays and Saturdays.

* Meanwhile, RHONDA (of 'Help Me RHONDA' fame) is being used at The Advertiser (SA) and Quest Community Newspapers. Athlete MELISSA GAINSFORD-TAYLOR is the face of the 15 Cumberland Newspapers spanning Sydney.

Austereo Set To Float

* PETER HARVIE, Austereo Executive Chairman, says the company's $421 million float on February 5 (with March 5 ASX debut) will be likely to bring overseas investment and new technology. Village Roadshow will retain 56 per cent of the group. The float proceeds will be used to retire about $400 million of THE KIRBY FAMILY'S Village Group, according to HELEN MATTERSON of The Weekend Australian.

Publisher Deported, 'No Returns'

* MARC NEIL-JONES, Publisher of The Vanuatu Trading Post, arrived at Brisbane Airport on Friday with little more than a pen, and Insulin for his diabetes. Nine policemen and immigration officials knocked on the door of his Port Vila home, after investigative reports in his publication, reports The Courier-Mail. NEIL-JONES was then promptly deported from Port Vila.

'Local' Sold

* TIM and CHRIS GRAHAM have purchased The Southern Peninsula Local weekly newspaper based at Rosebud (Vic.) from GREG GIBBS, ZOE STERLING and PHIL GANNON. The paid weekly paper was started by the trio in 1995, immediately after Leader Newspapers closed the Southern Peninsula Gazette, incorporating it within the free Mornington Peninsula Leader newspaper. The tabloid has been printed at BRUCE ELLEN'S Latrobe Valley Express, and the masthead won membership of the Victorian Country Press Association. The change of ownership comes as the Peninsula marketplace becomes tighter: FELIX GANDER'S Independent News Group has been producing 64-page Mornington/Southern Peninsula Mail editions in January; NEIL COLLYER'S Flyer (Fairfax Community Newspapers) has sat at 32 pages; and the Leader papers have produced healthy paginations for the New Year.

'Pompous Ass'

* PEER LINDHOLT'S Cabbie magazine tells the story of former Governor-General BILL HAYDEN embroiled in a dispute over a $9 cab fare when and wife DALLAS took a cab from Brisbane CBD to a near-city address. His Former Excellency tried to pay the fare with his Cabcharge card, but the machine could not get reception because the pair had asked to alight under a concrete building. Driver BRUCE KENT apologised that the machine failed, telling the Yarralumla duo he would need cash. HAYDEN was said to reply that the machine was the driver's problem and he had only $5. He gave MR KENT a business card, telling him to collect the fare at his city office next week. GG said taxi driver was threatening; KENT said ex-GG was a 'pompous ass'. A Vice-Regal-style complaint ensued: 'The driver unburdened himself in a blunt and direct way about what he though of me. It was very unpleasant.' Cabbie magaz

Damir's Tennis Net

* PETER LALOR of The Daily Telegraph recommends the damirdokic.net web page for a laugh. Melbourne firm Webarama is creating the site. JELENA'S dad has famous quotes, like his comments on New York: 'I'm never coming back to this pace. Too dirty and too communist. New York is a dirty, bad-smelling place, but it's got good shopping.'

An early version of the story ran at the website. www.nationalenquirer.com JACKSON has supplied mistress KARIN STANFORD with a number of items: a $US365,000 house, a $US40,000 relocation payment and a $US10,000 a month child support.

Sydney Siders

* RICHARD ACKLAND, Media Watch presenter (2000), wrote in Thursday's SMH that 'the prospect that Media Watch will return to your ABC is looking awfully slim ... the Executive Producer has quit because he wasn't allowed to have a say in the selection of the new presenter.' He says Commissioning Editor JEUNE PRITCHARD has just lost her job.

* ROBERT WHITEHEAD, Sydney Morning Herald Editor, visited the Chullora plant for the presentation of the 2000 School Newspaper Awards top going to The Independent Spirit, published by The Liverpool Girls' High School. The paper had a 53,494 circulation last month, as a four-page lift-out within IAN CROWTHER'S Liverpool City Champion, part of Fairfax Community Newspapers.

* DANIELLE TEUTSCH of The Manly Daily prepared a STAN ZEMANEK feature for her paper's weekend feature section, tracing the former 2UE and 2GB man's career from selling menswear at David jones at Brookvale. Zemanek is looking to run an ad agency this year, but TEUTSCH reminds us that 'CHAIRMAN STAN' tried this once before, getting $700,000 into debt. He convinced 2UE's JOHN BRENNAN to give him the night-time gig, claiming a ratings climb from 4 to 16.6. ZEMANEK'S 2GB effort was 3.8

Quadrant

In December's Quadrant magazine:

Mark Latham MP on Globalisation's optimists and pessimists - Greg Melleuish reviews Blainey's History of the World - Alan Gill on Britain under the Jackboot: occupied Jersey 60 years ago - Sean Regan on our post-modern Pilger - Peter Ryan defends the reputation of the judge who sent Ned Kelly to the gallows - the final instalment of Keith Windschuttle's analysis of Aborigine massacres, and the lies of the missionaries - Sophie Masson on Harry Potter - new poems by Les Murray and others.

Quadrant is a magazine that has always been identified with searching out the truth, making sure that one orthodoxy is not mistakenly replaced with another. One of the great roles of Quadrant has been its questioning of political correctness. And when I reflect . on the idleness of so many in academia and, despite some notable and well-known exceptions, on the shameful assault on the reputation of Geoffrey Blainey, you will have in mind the sorts of things that I think are relevant to the role of Quadrant. - John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia.

Melbourne Memo

* GREG HYWOOD'S appointment as Age Publisher and Editor-in-Chief brings with it rumors that The Sunday Age will convert to tabloid presentation from March. HYWOOD is expected to bring many of the Sydney Sun-Herald tabloid features, including a large color comics section as in the Tempo section. ALAN HOWE'S Sunday Herald Sun heavily reduced its kids' and comics section in 2000, and is now examining a massive re-launch of that feature. HOWE started his career at MAXWELL NEWTON'S Sunday Observer, which helped build its circulation from under 100,000 to 240,000 with a special children's color section headed by PETER VISKA, incorporating The Watchamacallit Club.

* ANNE CONNOR, PR consultant for Nillumbik Tourism Association, says 40 episodes of the Nine Network's Postcards, and the Seven Network's success with Explore Victoria, means plenty of TV exposure in 2001.

* GRAHAM KENNEDY'S one-time Frankston (Vic.) home is reportedly being sold to TOM CRUISE and NICOLE KIDMAN for $3.5 million.

Queensland Quips

* LARRY EMDUR, fresh from the collapse of Talk Radio, will host the Nine Network's Cash Bonanza, to be filmed at Warner Bros Movie World studios on the Gold Coast. The national program is being produced in conjunction with the Golden Casket agency and Grundy Television. NEIL MELLOY of The Courier-Mail says the program - maybe with a western theme - will possibly have viewer scratch-its.

West Wire

* PROFESSOR ALLAN FELS, Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, writes in HARRY KLEYN'S WA Business News: 'The Federal Court has found against Perth car dealer Goldy Motors over an advertisement in The West Australian newspaper on June 14 encouraging people to buy before June 30 because it was 'Last Chance to buy ... GST FREE!!' The ACCC was concerned that the representation may have misled consumers because the price of new vehicles was expected to, and indeed did has, been reduced with the introduction of the GST on July 1, 2000 ... JUSTICE CARR of the Federal Court rejected submissions on behalf of Goldy Motors that some of the declarations sought by the ACCC were 'an entirely unnecessary exercise' and issued injunctions preventing Goldy Motors from engaging in similar conduct in the future'.

* ROB PEDRETTI, Nine Perth Promotions Supervisor, says Postcards WA will have a 'Hot Deals' segment promoting special travel deals for viewers. A new reality TV series, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, where an unsuspecting viewer has to host a dinner party for their favorite celebrity, will also be in the 2001 line-up, according to CATIE LOW of WA Business News.

'Hold Onto Top People'

* CLIFF STONEMAN, MD of Raging Media, and Director of Dunhill Recruitment, advises media companies to hold on to their top media and advertising staff. He says they are under attack from non-traditional markets: 'The explosion of web sites, Internet, multi-media and technology driven solutions are taxing the evaporating pool of human resources in the Australian media and advertising marketplace. In addition, professional sales executives and managers are in high demand from new markets that value the solutions, conceptual sales and marketing experience developed in the media and advertising market.'

* STONEMAN continues: 'The Australia wide shortage of IT and communications candidates is also forcing up salaries and costs. For instance, companies who traditionally rewarded their media sales staff by low sales and high commissions are experiencing the most difficulty retaining and securing good staff. Quality candidates are aware of their position in the market and are moving away from 'at risk' incomes to stringer base salaries, commissions and bonuses. Companies must accept that if any salary package offered would probably be matched elsewhere, then other motivators become the reason people will join your organisation.'

* STONEMAN concludes: 'The new key motivators candidates want to hear about in interviews include Products/Brad Recognition, Family Values, Career Progression, Share Options, Company Vehicle, Travel, Work Environment, Mobile Phone, Lap Top, Palm Top, Unique Benefits (PR Events, Launches, Sporting and Entertainment Packages), Training and Development.'

* MR OVER-EXPOSURE - EDDIE McGUIRE is hosting a Nine Network Centenary of Federation special tonight (8.30pm, Mon., Jan. 22) with a look at 100 years of sporting triumphs and tragedies including the predictable line-up of usual suspects: GREG CHAPPELL, LIONEL ROSE, RAELENE BOYLE, LOU RICHARDS and BART CUMMINGS. We haven't even reached Australia Day 2001 yet!

Community Broadcasting

* ANITA WOOLDRIDGE and DANIEL SUTTON, of Sydney North Shore's 2NSB-FM, have picked up a Community Broadcasting Association excellence award for their Friday Fast Track program. The station - which moved to 99.3 FM permanently on December 22 - is also advertising to hire an Advertising Manager, and willing to pay a $60,000 package.

* 101FM at Logan City (Qld) had its transmitter fail unexpectedly just before Christmas. According to the Albert and Logan News: 'A new transmitter needed to be ordered immediately from Italy but there were no funds to pay for it. Station staff planned an urgent three-day radiothon to raise funds for the new transmitter. 101FM required $17,000 and with the help of the community of Logan City and beyond has raised over that figure in pledges and donations.'

* HEATHER HARRISON, ABC Sydney, is taking applications for the Classic FM Program Manager's job. ANZ102008.

* DAVID SALTER, former (and future?) ABC Media Watch Producer, wrote to Saturday's Australian about the death of Illawarra Mercury editor PETER CULLEN: 'Media Watch described CULLEN as the editor of a 'ratbag' newspaper and he was one of the few viewers who understood that we meant that term in its affectionate, old Australian sense and not as an insult.'

The Local Report

* HARTLEY HIGGINS and GEOFF HEYES have taken their Melbourne newspapers online. The Yarra Valley Newspapers Group publishes Nillumbik Mail (Eltham), Mountain Views Mail (Healesville) and its re-plated Upper Yarra Mail edition (Warburton-Yarra Junction), and the Ranges Trader Mail (Monbulk). The online site has linked with JOHN B. FAIRFAX'S Rural Press Property Guide, Auto Guide and Jobs Guide.

* TRACY MOTTOLA has taken the pole of Work Experience Co-Ordinator at Fairfax Community Newspapers (Vic.), amongst her other executive duties. Intelligently, the group has placed public notices in all papers asking for all 2001 work experience applications to be lodged by February 23.

Glass House

* KEVIN SHEEDY, Essendon football coach, is guest speaker at COLIN DUCK'S Geelong Advertiser Sports Star of the Year dinner, hosted by Geelong Parliamentarian/3AW Coodabeen Champion IAN COVER. Essendon coach at Geelong? If you can't beat 'em ...

* MICHAEL RAY of the High Country Times hasn't had the easiest time in educating the old-time Victorian Country Press Association that there is another paper in Mansfield apart from his commercial opponent HARTLEY HIGGINS' Mansfield Courier. RAY'S irritation won't be any better with the latest VCPA online 'update' has both papers based in Wangaratta! http://www.vcpa.com.au/material_delivery.htm#m

* RAYMOND HOSER, Smuggled.com scribbler, quotes JACK PACHOLLI of the Toorak Times in his site's bibliography. Now there's credibility!

* PENNE DENNISON hosted Prime on Foxtel's Music Country station, apologising for the absence of regular host HOLLY BRISLEY. Both stand in front of a chroma-key flat for 15-second intros over two hours. DENNISON said busty BRISLEY was 'on assignment' Puh-leeese!

FIRST MULTI-NATIONAL E-BOOK A South African computer expert and an Australian writer have published what they believe is the world's first multi-national electronic book. The free book, "Life Begins at Eighty ... On the Internet" by veteran Sydney journalist Eric Shackle, is posted on Barry Downs's Kimberley Web site, http://www.bdb.co.za/shackle/ebook.htm linked to other sites in the United States, England, Scotland, Australia and Bangladesh. Articles from the various sites cover a grab-bag of topics: the world's biggest turkey and largest hailstones, computer-generated anagrams, mysterious lights in Texas and Queensland, 15 towns named Rugby, Global English, and how to cultivate a herb said to ease arthritic pains. "Like most of my generation, I used to regard the Internet as a fearsome monster rapidly devouring the world we knew," 81-year-old Shackle says in the introduction. " Then at the age of 79, I bought my first computer, studied David Pogue's hilarious book The i-Mac for Dummies, and began a new life. Captivated by the magic of the World Wide Web, I began writing freelance articles about my discoveries. Some of them have been published by the New York Times, the Globe and Mail (Toronto, Canada), the Straits Times (Singapore) and the Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) ... "Read some of my articles [which] I hope will inspire other retirees to join the world's largest library, and share its magical allure."

Editor's E-Mail

* SARAH STENT of Media Communications, Sun Smart, as joined the Media Flash gang in 2001. So too has RACHEL WUNDHEILER at the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria, who writes: 'I'd like to resubscribe. I have lost touch since I left the immigration Museum in September. Looking forward to receiving more Media Flashes.'

* CAROLYN MUNCKTON is now on the MF weekly list. So are SEAN HAMMOND of ACUS; BEN BUTLER at Beat Magazine; SARAH STINSON at A Current Affair, Nine Network; and JENNI AUSTIN at Swinburne.

* FERGUS PITT, Web Designer at Triple J (ABC), writes: 'Sign me up baby'.

* TASSIE subscriber writes: 'Dear Ash, Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am really pleased to have found your site - what a find! You may be interested in my "accidental discovery". I was looking at employment in The Age (both print and online) and saw an ad to which I replied by phone. I was suspicious of the response and decided to look up Toorak Times on Yahoo search. Behold! Your May 2000 Edition came up with the information on JACK PACHOLLI and his dog, OSCAR. As I suspected, something fishy there! Now I'm hooked! I am currently in the throes of moving and will subscribe when settled. Meanwhile, I think your site is the greatest discovery since sliced bread! Thanks.'

* PHIL BRADLEY, Assistant Program Director at 3SRFM and SUN FM (Goulburn and Border Broadcasters) writes: 'Hi Ash, Some months ago, while I was in Wagga at 2WG, I was receiving your e-mailout. Like the majority of your subscribers I would look forward to my weekly dose of the Flash. Now doing breakfast and Assistant Program Director in Shepparton at 3SRFM (for six months) I have found - as the song says - 'something missing in my life'. To cut a long story short, could I please be added to your weekly list again.'

Stix And Stones

* STEVE STICKNEY, Editor at The Manly Daily, examines:

* 'NCUTFU MONGOMEZULU, the uncle of the King and the Prince, said the demonstration had cursed his nephews, who will have to be cleansed with an African root to remove the magic' - getting rid of bad vibes in Swaziland sounds like a helluva lot more fun than a boring old exorcism. National Post (Canada).

* 'JANG'S picture of a dismembered child in a cooking pot says more than any of the numbing statistics'' - horrifying evidence of cannibalism in the North Korean city of Hoeroung, shown in Children of the Secret State, a BBC documentary produced by Carla Garapedian. The Australian.

* 'BOB HAWKE picks up the bat towards gully ... KIM BEAZLEY doesn't hold his weight on his front foot ... but you are bio-mechanically perfect'' - former Test cricketer KERRY O'KEEFE gets a gusher on with this description of Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S bowling action while sharing the SCG commentators' booth with the PM during the Test against the West Indies. ABC Radio.

* 'Nobody asked me'' - newly-elected TOM ALCIERE (since resigned) explains how his views in favour of wife-beating and murdering police were not discovered before he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. The Times (US).

Trewistle - De-Classified

Now that Canberra has de-classified the file, we are free to publish the entire Trewistle saga. One or two episodes may seem familiar. Ask yourself: "Did I miss something insignificant?"

Trewistle bytes off on-line gaming, mobiles

* Flushed with NASDAQ success, e-wizard MILTON TREWISTLE has forayed into online casino territory and staked a claim in the mobile phone sector. * Trewistle Technology (TT) has rolled out the proto-type of a bathroom gaming access system tagged Crown Ceramics. A wall-mounted quadruple image "fruit machine" display is activated by the flush-button and dispenses prizes and penalties online. * A winning combination (cherry/banana/sponsor logo/raspberry) credits $1 to the subscriber's mobile phone account. Losers are debited 20c by the same system. * Industry critics claim that players will be tempted to try again if they lose, causing heavy demands on already taxed water supplies. But Trewistle has pre-empted this with a timer that refuses to re-activate the game for five minutes after each play. * Attempts to over-ride the system cause downpipe blockage. "The system is tamper-proof," the inventor added. "It's wired with 50g of Semtex." * A blockbuster ad campaign will promote Crown Ceramics as "a New Millenium combination of health, recreation and investment". Trewistle believes the concept worthy of a listing. * "This is a floater if ever I saw one," he declared.

Long Shots

By Ash Long, Publisher, Media Flash

* JOHN BLACKMAN has headlined the past two issues of Media Flash (Jan. 1 and Jan. 8). Back on Jan. 8, we were first to identify that his four-year stint at 3AK was probably over. CLAIRE HEANEY reported a week later in the Herald Sun that it was.

* BLACKMAN'S threat to quit reminds us of three great radio publicity stunts: DERRYN HINCH being suspended on air by 3AW chief BRIAN WHITE; RIC MELBOURNE leading a DJ's strike at 3DB to go to 3KZ; and PETER 'GRUBBY' STUBBS 'accidentally' giving away a $50,000 prize at FOX-FM. With HINCH due to start at re-cashed 3AK today, wouldn't have been surprised to see BLACKMAN re-join the station in a last-minute patch-up? At least, If we were their publicists, it wouldn't be a shock!

* STEVE HARRIS is handing over The Age Publisher's baton to GREG HYWOOD. Simultaneously, the paper is back to discounting intro subscriptions, at $4 a week for 10 weeks - with free delivery. The 'house ad' says: 'You say you read and enjoy our paper regularly, but you don't make it an everyday thing? You probably have your reasons.'

* Another quarter-page 'house ad' has Age weekend subscriptions going out at $2.30 a week.

* WHAT'S THE SUB-TEXT? Age had a 'We Were Wrong' piece on Saturday which ended: 'The error was made in copy supplied by The Sydney Morning Herald to The Age.'

* COLIN BROOKS and DALE PETERS, City of Banyule Councillors, and Banyuie Observer partners, came to the spotlight late in 2000 for failing to declare their perceived conflicts of interests at municipal meetings. Even 3AW jock STEVE PRICE gave MAYOR PETERS a blast, after the Media Flash story. The pair publish 25,000 copies fortnightly, and have averaged an Editor a month since the paper started in September. A small classified ad appeared in Saturday's Age that seeks a Journo who also sells ads! Is this from them?

'Journalist required for suburban newspaper in metro Melbourne. Main duties including writing and gathering news, layout and advertising sales. Knowledge of publishing software essential. Suit recent university graduate. Send resumes to Box 1267, Bundoora, 3083 by 19th Jan.'

Media Money

* ROB SITCH'S 'Working Dog' partnership with JANE KENNEDY, SANTO CILAURO, TOM GLEISNER and MICHAEL HIRSH will earn $17.25 million in receipts for The Dish, according to MICHAEL BODEY of The Daily Telegraph. Exhibitors take $8 million, and distributors grab $4 million. Working Dog can expect a $5.25 million, plus $3.5 mil. free-to-air TV rights, $600,000 pay TV rights, $2 mil. video sales, $200,000 hotel screening rights, $250,000 airline screening rights.

Bottom Line

* 172: The number of Look Smart directory staff who copped the bullet last week. Melbourne couple EVAN THORNLEY and TRACEY ELLERY listed the company with Nasdaq in August 1999. Now it's Reality v Revenue Forecasts.

* 400: the sacking list at CNN, where about 10 per cent of the workforce are receiving 'the pink slip'.

The Last Word

* PETE STEEDMAN and JOHN PASQUARELLI are no doubt waiting for the phone call to become MR LEFT and MR RIGHT on Melbourne radio. If JOHN BLACKMAN can't get a regular gig at AK, how will these two go?
