Scoop Images: Magical Light Over Lake Ohau
More images of the environs of the most photogenic mountain village in the world taken by Norman Mackay .
P.S. A follow up from the photo of "Frankie" (See...Ice Dog With Heart Of A Lion). His NZ minders were elated to see a photo of him on your site, as was his mistress who was visiting him from Brisbane , Australia.. ( It was always thought that Frankie would make the front page, but not in this fashion... ). He is a pedigree, but forgets himself at times..
Snow on Lake Middleton - taken
0n 14/6/01 at about 10am. Lake Middleton has progressively
become more ice covered as winter bites hard here in the
High Country. The ice was hard enough for me to walk out
about twenty metres this morning The sign of a really cold
winter is when Lake Middleton completely ices over. It could
happen this year with the really low temperatures we have
been having recently.
Front View Again - speaks for
itself. It was taken on the morning of 1/7/01 looking
straight up Lake Ohau towards the mountain in the centre of
the photo, which is Glen Mary.
Towards Mt Sefton - taken on
the 14th June this year at first light. You can see a light
coming from the direction of Glen Lyon Station, home of the
Wigley family, the founders of the Mt Cook airline.
The Purple Lake - taken on the
23rd June this year, once again at first light. It shows the
Ben Ohau range of mountains and Lake Ohau looking decidedly
purple which is quite unusual. The normal colour being pink
or red. The early bird catches the best light for great
photos, so I get up early each morning ( in my dressing gown
), collect my Kodak digital camera, and wait for the right
light to appear. I then proceed to take my photos ( still in
my dressing gown ) outside in temperatures as low as -10C..
I have to be quite quick as the correct light will only be
there for as little as 60 seconds. Timing is the key ( and
not being too concerned about the outside temperature
).
