Major General Maurice Dodson has been the target of an 18 month campaign of misinformation designed to discredit him personally, to prevent his becoming Chief of Defence Force.
He is seen as a dangerous option by the old defence establishment, for having done his duty in embracing the government policy of the day. They have blamed him personally for the Labour Alliance policies which have seen the cancellation of Navy and Air Force major equipment purchases.
It is also a rearguard action by the sabre-rattlers to install their preferred candidates in the top echelons of Defence in an attempt to frustrate Helen Clark's defence policy. And to position Defence to return to the National Party policy when the Nats regain power.
Te Karere Ipurangi is aware of a plan that involves a reversal or dilution of Army policy concerning the purchase of 105 LAVs, should the Old Guard manage to regain control of Defence and Army as a result of this current round of appointments. This would most likely occur during election year 2002, and be designed to cause maximum political ambarassment for the Labour Alliance government.
The campaign is being run by a loose grouping including some elements of the Emminent Persons Defence Group, the National Party Defence Group, the gang of seven and the NZRSA. It is coordinated by a public relations consultant who has strong ties to the National Party.
