HARD NEWS 28/02/03 - Very Busy
Hi folks,
I thought I'd better get out a post to the list before the week expired. I haven't had the time to blog much this week: my partner strained her back so badly on Friday night that she couldn't walk unaided for two days, and I, as luck would have it, also had a lot of work on.
Big ups to the British Council, the Music Industry Commission and Mai FM for organising the Resonate music and video seminar this week. I chaired the first day, with Brent Hansen, Pete Chambers and Liz Kessler, and it was a successful and satisfying experience. We later took the Brits out for a night on the town (actually, on Ponsonby Road) and that was successful and satisfying in a different, but no less valid, way.
Anyway, the results of the Hard News Faith Challenge 2003 really are coming soon, and so is that Vint Cerf transcript (the story is in the coming week's Listener). But not today. Today I am allowing someone to buy me lunch and then I am watching the Blues beat the Chiefs. Go Carlos! Nice.
Cheers,
RB

Auckland's petit mayor
John Banks is set to pump up his annual salary to the tune
of $45,741 . What's his rationale? When I was employed by
the Auckland City Council a continuance of a salaried
position let alone a pay rise had to be justified annually
according to a written set of official milestones and
objectives. John-John: the ratepayers would like to read
your list. And no, polishing up the mayoral jerkin and ...

Rob O'Neill live
in Sydney
We wandered out on Saturday to get the Girlie a
desk. Years 11 and 12, as they call sixth and seventh form
over here, are pretty important and she's got a lot of work
to do heading into her HSC (Higher School
Certificate)...

Brown's Hard News
In 1983, I came to work in a building
that stood at the corner of Queen and Darby Streets in
central Auckland. A Body Shop squats expensively there now,
at the foot of one of the National bank towers. Back then,
it was four rickety stories, no lift, and it was home to an
odd bunch...

My friend Vanessa once found herself
trying to explain the "tall poppies" metaphor to an American
acquaintance. As she elaborated, he looked increasingly
aghast. "Oh my God," he interjected, "They chop their heads
off? Because they're too, what, tall, you said? That's the
most barbaric thing I ever heard!" Vanessa was pretty
impressed by this gung-ho defence of the divine right to be
the best, even if it seemed a tad over the top, ...

Damian Christie - Cracker With
Attitude
In Australia, it's okay for the Prime Minister
to go to the Whitehouse, have a discussion with the
President and come out addressing the nation with the phrase
'We want Saddam Hussein to get Fair Dinkum!' Bush however,
didn't find it to his liking, apparently getting weighed
down by the detail and reasoning of Mr Howard's speech...

Slow surrender: Peter Sanson on yoga/life |Feb 16, 2003

Debra Daley's astral plane
We are sitting at a
table in a cafe in Grey Lynn with yoga teacher Peter Sanson
and his partner Hojung Audenaerde. It is a lovely,
glittering summer morning. After teaching yoga for years
all around the world, Peter Sanson remarks that we NZers are
very hard on ourselves and that we suppress strong emotions.
That is why, on this trip to Auckland, he is witnessing some
of the most angry, aggressive driving he's ever ...
