- A strong quake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale was felt at 12.12am on 23 August 2003. The quake was centred 70 kilometres northwest of Te Anau. A number of aftershocks, including one registering at 6.1 at 2.10 am were registered by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. See...
