Is US Govt. Capable Of Lying About Saddam Hussein?

A chronology

1. Sunday, December 14, 2003: U.S. capture of Saddam Hussein is disclosed. Reports say that U.S. forces captured him on Saturday night.

2. Monday, December 15, 2003: U.S. Senator Bill Nelson reports in a secret briefing, the Bush administration told senators Iraq had capability to hit U.S. East Coast with WMD, leading to their vote to use military force.

3. Wednesday, December 17, CBS Evening News reports that for the first time, the chairman of the independent September 11 commission is "saying publicly that 9/11 could have and should have been prevented."

The Reasons our country attacked Iraq

In Monday's Florida Today report, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said the Bush administration last year told him and other senators, that Iraq not only had weapons of mass destruction, but they had the means to deliver them to East Coast cities. According to Nelson, about 75 Senators were told in a classfied briefing that Iraq had biological and chemical weapons, including anthrax, and that it could deliver the weapons to cities along the Eastern seaboard with "unmanned aerial vehicles" (UAV), known as drones. Nelson stated:

This news was delivered to about 75 Senators before last October's congressional vote authorizing the use of force to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Senator Nelson, a Democrat, voted in favor of using military force. He said he could not reveal what member of the Neocon/Bush regime provided the information in the secret briefing to the senators.

When media asked the Neocon/Bush regime about about the matter, they directed inquiries to the Department of Defense. Defense officials had no comment on Nelson's claim, according to the Florida Today report.

The September 11 Commission

In the CBS report provided by Axis of Logic we are told that Thomas Kean, Chairman of the September 11 Commission has "more questions than answers". He was appointed to the commission by George Bush and is a former Republican governor of New Jersey. Kean is now pointing to those inside the Neocon/Bush regime and laying down blame. As Chairman of the September 11 Commission, he stated:

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile,"

-National security adviser Condoleeza Rice on May 16, 2002.

Thomas Kean says, "There are people that, if I was doing the job, would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed. They simply failed."

Kristen Breitweiser is one of four New Jersey widows who lobbied Congress and the president to appoint the commission. She asked,

"How is it possible we have a national security advisor coming out and saying we had no idea they could use planes as weapons when we had FBI records from 1991 stating that this is a possibility"

The alleged capture of Saddam Hussein

The day before Senator Nelson released the news that the Bush administration lied to 75 senators about Iraq's weapons, Saddam Hussein's capture was reported. The report on the capture took place 3 days before the September 11 Commission placed blame on the Bush Administration. Since Monday, the corporate media is inundating the American public with wall-to-wall coverage of the sudden "capture" of Saddam Hussein. Dominating the corporate media outlets, the story on the capture of Saddam Hussein has all but drowned out what one would expect to headline every U.S. Newspaper and TV News show.

Predictably, CNN now reports that Saddam Hussein's capture caused a "sharp spike in President Bush's approval ratings". According to the CNN/USA Today, Gallup poll, Bush "... had a lead of more than 20 percentage points over Democratic front-runner Howard Dean in a hypothetical matchup among registered voters."

Are these near-concurrent events purely coincidental? Perhaps. Perhaps not. To draw conclusions would be premature - and lets face it - the world may never know. Do we have questions? Absolutely. Thomas Kean admitted the 9/11 Commission "has more questions than answers". We do too! Our first question to every American is this:

"Do you believe your government is capable of lying to you about such important issues: The reasons for attacking Iraq, The capture of Saddam Hussein and September 11, 2001?"

It's not an easy question for most Americans, but it's an important one all should at least consider. It is difficult ... and frightening ... to think that those leading our nation could be capable of such heinous behavior. The corporate media and the government is fond of marginalizing persons who ask such questions as, "Conspiracy Theorists". But we have no conspiracy theory. We only have questions. A healthy skepticism of those who are leading our country is the lifeblood of our democracy.
