If Words Could Talk...

What luck for rulers, that men do not think." ~~Adolph Hitler"Find out just what people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them... the limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."~~Frederick Douglass
I'm not lazy, but when George "Peanuts" Bush trotted up to the podium on January 20, state-of-the-union football tucked under his arm, to give the American people yet another futile shot at making a play, it occurred to me that it might be easier to list a truth, if he told one, rather than labor through the usual litany of lies.
Either way, catching Bush in a truth is getting to be a chore. Wonder what would have happened if Bush had told the real truth about the sorry mess he's made of the union -- had told the real truth about why he dragged this nation into a bloody, needless war? He'd have been lucky if both Democrats and Republicans didn't drop-kick him through the goalposts of the chamber or -- even better -- make him ride a rail all the way from Capital Hill to Crawford, Texas, leaving nothing but tar and feathers in his wake...
My friend Bernie says Bush didn't lie about going to war. He says Bush always knew he was going after Saddam.
"That's why they put him in there. He's the only one of that squirrely bunch who could fool most of the people all of the time," Bernie chuckled. "Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld, Perle, Wolfowitz -- the whole gang -- they've been up-front about takin' over the world from the get-go. They always knew where they were going. Only trouble they're having now is figuring out how to get there from here..."
I stared at Bernie in slack-jawed disbelief. "Where have you been?" I asked. "Since 9-11 we've had nothing but a screeching cacophony of lies -- terrorizing us, whipping us into submission, coming at us from every direction! Don't you remember the lies Bush told about weapons of mass destruction in last year's State of the Union fiasco? The threats he made the year before that? Where were you when Colin Powell pulled the UN's leg about WMD for 90 minutes? And, how about Condoleezza Rice? She finally had to just shut up because she was out there stumbling around telling new lies about her old lies.
"Not to mention Dick Cheney," I pointed out wearily. "His snarling, robotic, 'gathering danger...sudden horror' repetition offers, at best, ghoulish comic relief. Why, Cheney's out there right now saying screw the evidence -- Saddam's WMD are stuffed in cubbyholes and junk yards, buried under rose bushes -- and we're going to find them. Bernie," I said, "we've lost 615 coalition troops, and 518 of them are US citizens. They're all dead because of lies. Every time Bush opens his mouth, his head starts spinning and lies spew out! It's like being forced to watch reruns of The Exorcist over and over and over and -- "
"Nah..." Bernie said serenely. "You just haven't learned how to listen to 'em. It's easy. You gotta remember that every day is opposite day with this bunch. Every word means its opposite. Like George Orwell said, you gotta have a bellyfeel for what they're sayin'.
"Look at it this way -- on the home front, whatever Bush says he's gonna do for the people, just figure he's gonna do the exact opposite, only to the people. Poor little guy," Bernie sighed, "Other than having the time of his life being top stud in the US corral, he doesn't have a clue. He just reads what they stick in his face, most of it recycled crap that makes folks cringe. Forget Junior. He's a cartoon character."
Can't argue with that. People all over the world view Bush as kind of a wacky, Saturday-morning type of guy. He's a warning to mothers everywhere of what can happen when their kids are products, even dropouts, of the video-game generation.
Sometimes Bush is Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's heroic and virtuous Captain America -- draped in the personae of the US Flag -- locked in a death struggle with the violent, twisted and monstrously evil Red Skull. When stuff starts to pile up, suddenly he's Buzz Lightyear, a galactical space cowboy who, with heroic exuberance, takes his US Star Command to...Infinity -- and Beyond!
Someone should remind Bush that it doesn't matter what costume he wears on any given day, all those zooming, flying, exploding body parts belong to real people, and far too many of them are ours.
"Remember --" Bernie said, interrupting my reverie, "search the lies if you want to find the truth. A good place to start is FDR. Then hit Poppy and Cheney. Check out the New World Order. And," he said with a wide grin as he headed out the door, "Listen to the words. When the truth finally hits you -- it'll knock your wig in the creek."
A Good Place to Start
The first US president to speak of a New World Order and to warn the populace of "gathering dangers" and "plotters afoot" was Franklin D. Roosevelt. In his January 6, 1941 state of the union speech almost a year before the Japanese mysteriously breached every single level of US intelligence and warning mechanisms to wreck sudden havoc on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt issued a call to war against the "new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb." He went on to say, "The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society..."
Hitler did indeed yearn for a new world order. He even wrote a book about it entitled "The World Order," wherein he exclaimed, "National Socialism will use its own revolution for the establishing of a new world order."
Aldous Huxley was so obsessed with the idea that he wrote two books -- "Brave New World" in 1931 and "Brave New World Revisited" in 1958. H.G. Wells even got into the act in 1939 and scared the bejeezus out of us with his "New World Order"...
It seems like everybody who is anybody has been out there for generations, chatting up their ideas of a new world order which, not surprisingly, would only work if they were in control of it. For example:
"We must establish a new world order based on justice, on equity, and on peace"~~Fidel Castro United Nations 1979"We are moving toward a new world order, the world of communism. We shall never turn off that road"~~Mikhail Gorbachev 1987
"Two centuries ago our forefathers brought forth a new nation; now we must join with others to bring forth a new world order"~~The Declaration of Interdependence 1976
"National Socialism will use its own revolution for establishing of a new world order"~~Adolph Hitler during World War II
"Our nation is uniquely endowed to play a creative and decisive role in the new order which is taking form around us"~~Henry Kissinger Seattle Post Intelligencer 1975
Like Hitler, Roosevelt realized what a handy little tool the media could be to manipulate public opinion and to puff up patriotism and national pride, even if his emotionally charged rhetoric was based on lies. In his infamous radio address just two months before Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt further mesmerized a public with dire warnings, most of whom were already clutching their radios in abject terror.
He warned Americans that Hitler's design for a new world order exended across the Atlantic Ocean, and he told them that he had a "secret map" made by the planners of that new world order that proved Hitler's assault was against the United States itself.
A gathering and imminent danger. Sudden horror in the homeland... Sound familiar?
Watch My Lips
George H.W. (Poppy) Bush is generally given credit for first promoting a new world order on this side of the Atlantic. In his 1991 State of the Union speech leading up to the first assault on Iraq, he noted, "What is at stake is more than one small country; it is a big idea: a new world order, where diverse nations are drawn together in common cause to achieve the universal aspirations of mankind..."
Like his son, Poppy was first-class at seizing opportunities, promising successes, sending warnings and threatening consequences. He told the Congess and the people, "We will succeed in the Gulf. And when we do, the world community will have sent an enduring warning to any dictator or despot, present or future, who contemplates outlaw aggression. The world can, therefore, seize this opportunity to fulfill the long-held promise of a new world order, where brutality will go unrewarded and aggression will meet collective resistance."
After crushing Iraq with little or no resistance, a triumphant Poppy, who refused to campaign for his job against a no-name Arkansas hillbilly, was back before we the people. In a March 6, 1991 speech, he gloated -- "Now we can see a new world coming into view. A world in which there is the very real prospect of a new world order..."
Before we get too excited about Poppy having "that vision thaing," a closer look reveals the man crouched behind the bushes, then as secretary of defense and now as vice president -- the man with a plan -- Dick Cheney. Because he was so confident of having four more years to get the world in order, Cheney had his Defense Strategy for the 1990s: The Regional Defense Strategy ready to be implemented immediately after Poppy's re-election.
"We must not stand back and allow a new global threat to emerge or leave a vacuum in a region critical to our interests," Cheney wrote. "It is not in our interest or those of the other democracies to return to earlier periods in which multiple military powers balanced one against another..." Cheney said the goal of his strategy "is to raise a...barrier to the rise of any serious global challenge" to U.S. power...
Although Cheney failed to detect the "gathering danger" that ultimately derailed a second Poppy term as well as his aspirations for world domination, he was not deterred. He remained really, really busy during the ensuing years, never deviating from his obsession of privatizing the globe.
Cheney was joined by like-minded neo-conservatives within the military and corporate network. Right-wing "think tanks" blossomed. The most influential group was the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), founded by the Weekly Standard's William Kristol, and whose members included Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz, both of whom are now foxes watching the defense henhouse; and Lewis Libby, Cheney's chief of staff, among others.
Cheney and PNAC were prepared for 2000 and for the selection of their bully puppet. Anyone reading the revised Cheney manifesto published in September 2000, "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century," would not be surprised at the events of the last three years.
This document is a roadmap for PNAC's version a New World Order. It calls for preemptive retaliation; that is, we have the right to destroy any group or country whom we even remotely suspect may be thinking of some day threatening our national interests. Or whatever. This zany gang of chickenhawks -- whom Stan Lee might dub the "Sinister Kabal for the Undermining of Life and Liberty (SKULL)" -- warn in their ominious 76-page report and in Bush's more compressed doppleganger National Security Strategy, all options of "self defense" are on the table, to include nuclear weapons.
New World Disorder
If words could talk, perhaps Americans would hear the howling madness of a plan whose every word means its exact opposite. Perhaps they would recognize the truth buried in the tangle of administration lies. Maybe they would recognize the sheer global insanity of throwing innocent lives into an unending bottomless void, a black hole with no moral center. They might even resist being sucked further into the alternate reality of a Captain America versus the Red Skull video-game world.
The eudemonistic concept of an orderly world wherein all nations are at peace, where there is respect for the multiplicity of cultures, races and religions, and where there is justice for all would indeed be welcome -- a world that all inhabitants on this planet would embrace. Unfortunately, that is not the world envisioned by those in control who are obsessed with a degenerate lust for power, and who plan to destroy anything that stands between them and a murky sphere which, as Aristotle said, could be inhabited only by gods and beasts.
Bernie is right. It's time for people throughout the world to dig through the lies. Once they discover the single glaring New World Order truth -- not only will it knock their wigs in the creek -- no one will dare doubt the word of America again.
