Governance Or Admin? Benson-Pope Hauls Fishermen Back To Port

    - In an unprecedented move the Minister of Fisheries is calling the bulk of New Zealand's squid fishing fleet back to port to prevent seabird deaths. It is the first step in a package of measures David Benson-Pope is introducing to address a lack of commitment by the majority of industry to codes of practice designed to protect seabirds. See... British PM Tony Blair Wins Third-Term Victory

    Tony
Blair exits a polling booth with wife Cherie Blair. - Image
courtesy of labour.org.uk Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair has won an historic third election for Labour albeit with a reduced majority in the House down from a 161 seat majority in 2001 to a 66 seat lead at close of polls today. Political commentators in Britain suggest the erosion of Blair's hold on the treasury benches is due to fall-out over the Iraq war and immigration issues. Predictions of a higher turnout than the dismal 59.4 per cent in 2001 appear to have been justified. See... Blair Wins 3rd Term - But Majority Slashed [1]

    SCOOP COLUMNS:
Kevin List: Nazis & Winston Peters Most Excellent Sources

    - A Week of It can but wonder at the marvelousness of Mr Peters sources, not only do they know more about what's happening with Iraqi Cabinet Ministers than the Immigration Service, but they also seem to know more about what is going on at McLeod and Associates than the firm's own consultant. Dave McArthur Sees Some Lucidity Albeit Not In NZ's Media

    - “What does living in Lala land mean?” This question is put to me this week by a friend from India. I answer with a string of expressions: It means you are away with the fairies. Out of your tree. You don’t have your feet on the ground. You are out of touch with reality. You live in cloud cuckoo land. You are bit crazy, dotty nutty over-optimistic. I might have added that you are like many of New Zealand’s most prominent business and media people with regard to oil and gas. See... Bonus Joules: A Major Encounter [1]

Greg Palast On The Times's Smoking Gun Iraq Memo

    - The top-level government memo marked "SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL," dated eight months before Bush sent us into Iraq, following a closed meeting with the President, reads, "Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy." See... UQ Wire: If The Moon Could Talk, What Would It Say?

    - While the controversy in England about the advice of the Attorney General on the legality of the Iraq war rages on and fuels requests for its publication in full, in America, George W. Bush is luckier and has survived the Valerie Plame issue, WMD’s, and the scathing report on the failure of intelligence prior to 9/11, the question is, how would both deal with the issue brought up in this article that potentially dwarfs all other issues. The Guardian Refers To NZ's Carbon Tax Policy As An Experiment

    - National Party Finance spokesman John Key says Labour's carbon tax is being described as an 'experiment' by the influential English newspaper The Guardian. According to an article in The Guardian this week 'the experiment will be watched closely by bigger countries which are also committed to reducing carbon emissions but are failing to reduce energy demand'.
