Cabinet Approves $20 million Loan To Meet Insolvent Wananga's Needs

Education Minister Trevor Mallard announced today that he had initiated two holding actions following advice that Te Wananga O Aotearoa is on the brink of insolvency, and will be unable to meet its financial commitments over the next fortnight, including wages to staff and payments to creditors. "Today Cabinet has approved a short term loan of $20 million to meet immediate cash flow requirements this month, including debt repayment and payroll. The loan has been initiated following an investigation by Crown Manager Brian Roche into the financial state of the wananga, which has revealed the situation to be worse than initially thought," Trevor Mallard said. Tainui Distributes Profit To Its People

- Te Kaumaarua, the executive of Te Kauhanganui (the Waikato-Tainui tribal parliament) has approved nearly $2 million in grants to Waikato-Tainui members and marae. Chairman, Kingi Porima, said today the grants totalled $1.85 million. That included increased education grants and a new marae fund. The money came from the profits of the tribe’s commercial arm Tainui Group Holdings (TGH). A second round of grants was expected later in the year. See...
