STORY:
Scoop Column: Kevin List's A Week Of
It Is In…
Having the good fortune to attend a fine Catholic School in the mid-80s, (St Bede's), this episode brought back memories of choice in education. In this case the choice related to which cane an evildoer would get their punishment from. An elderly scholar of the French language would present evildoers with the choice of the cutter, the masher or the basher. The cutter was so called because it was guaranteed to draw blood even after only 'a couple of licks'. A Week Of It: Publishing & Punishment [1]

Wellington City Report Says V8 Race Should Not Go
Ahead
- A Wellington City Council report will recommend Councillors do not proceed with the proposal to host a V8 Supercars race in the capital in 2007. Council officers have made the recommendation because of two issues relating to the resource consent process: - The time required to get a resource consent - The cost and uncertainty of the resource consent application process… See... Will Security Woes Erode Labour's Confidence
- Paul Buchanan considers whether there is a slow cloud building on the horizon of Labour’s re-election. It has loomed larger for the last three years, although it has it origins in previous National governments. That cloud is called insecurity. There is a general unease in the air about security-related issues. Public apprehension is not so much about immediate security threats as it is about the government’s ability to plan for and deal with them. On that score, there is wide spread scepticism that transcends the normal boundaries of social uncertainty about the future. See... Lapses in Security Have Election Implications [1]

Scoop Satire: How Come Iraqis Haven't Heard Of Amer
Mahdi Saleh Khashaly
- Lyndon Hood writes that Amer Mahdi Saleh Khashaly's profile has been low since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Many Iraqs had never even heard of him, let alone thought of lynching him. Even the occupying forces had ignored him. So despite his fondest wishes, when he left Iraq he was quite likely to return. But thanks to WInston Peters, his outlook has changed. See... Brash Urges PM To Release Notes And Transcrips On Doone
Affair
- National Party Leader Don Brash says the latest selective leaks around the Doonegate affair have the "trademark Helen Clark feel about them. Helen Clark has already been caught out repeatedly seeding false information to a national newspaper." Dr Brash is responding to a one-line quote which appears in the Christchurch Press today. "Helen Clark must release all the notes and transcripts so the public can see the full story. So far she has refused repeated calls in Parliament to do so. Selective leaks only serve to erode her credibility further." See... Release the transcripts [1]
