Crucial Senate Vote On John Bolton Nomination To UN Fails
The US Senate vote for cloture on the John Bolton nomination to the United Nations Ambassadorship has failed to pass. 56 Senators voted for cloture and 42 against the motion. As a result the full vote on John Bolton's nomination will not be held.
Mr Bolton's nomination is one of the most controversial issues that has come before the Senate this year. In practical terms this is likely to mean that it will be another eight or nine days before the Republican Party can attempt to push the nomination through again.
The Democratic Party leadership who voted against the nomination have been at pains to explain that the vote against Mr Bolton was not a filibuster, but rather was in order to obtain information concerning Mr Bolton that has been denied to the Senate.
Notably the vote comes just days after an historic agreement between 14 senators, seven Democrats and seven Republicans, to resolve a dispute over judicial nomination fillibusters.
