Trade Union Head Warns Workers Against Voting National

- “The CTU will be sounding a serious warning to working people about what they could expect from a National Government,” Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today. Union leaders representing more than 300,000 union members in the public and private sectors met in Wellington today to discuss General Election issues. “The National Party’s industrial relations policy makes crystal clear that it would take us back to the adversarial days of the 1990s with the policies that left us with low wages, child poverty, and skill shortages that still hamper economic and social development today,” Ross Wilson said. Health Ministry Says No More Influenza B Related Deaths Reported

- No further deaths of children and young people due to influenza B have been identified by District Health Boards. The Ministry of Health has received information from all 21 District Health Boards asked to look into possible influenza B cases in their areas since April 1 2005. See... Economic Activity Increases Due To Lift In Internal Demand

- Economic activity increased 0.6 percent in the March 2005 quarter, Statistics New Zealand said today. This followed increases of 0.3 and 0.6 percent in the December and September 2004 quarters, respectively. Growth this quarter resulted from a lift in internal demand (up 1.3 percent), which was partly offset by a fall in export volumes (down 2.6 percent). - Selwyn Manning reports that Australian Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson resigned Thursday afternoon citing ill-health had caused him to lose his passion for politics. It is understood Anderson is suffering from a prostate problem. A reshuffle of John Howard's conservative government's cabinet is now on order. - This week the government admitted to a billion dollar bungle. The Labour government claimed in 2002 that New Zealand would gain an immediate surplus of carbon 'credits', due to the carbon sinks created by New Zealand forests.
