Lyndon Hood: Don Brash of La Mancha
[1] Somewhere in La Mancha, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, a gentleman - what the Spanish call a Don - lived not long ago, who during his leisure hours loved nothing better than to read the works of Friedmanite economists. And with time his passion for these works grew so great that, combined with lack of sleep and a diet of incompetent home cooking, the nature of his reading caused his brain become dry and, indeed, cracked. Zimbabwe: Amnesty International (NZ) Cites Deaths At Harare
Settlement
As New Zealand continues to debate
whether the Black Caps go to Zimbabwe, Amnesty International
has cited reports that at least three have died -- including
a pregnant woman and a four-year-old child. “Over the last
48 hours, Porta Farm – a settlement of at least 10,000
people -- has been obliterated. People have watched their
lives being completely destroyed – and many are now being
forcibly removed in trucks by police. At the moment we are
not sure where they are being taken,” said spokesperson
Kolawole Olaniyan. See... Zimbabwe:

PM Maps Out Labour's Policy Platform
- Prime
Minister Helen Clark says that 1 July is another important
milestone date for the government’s policy programme, which
is about building a stronger future for New Zealand. “A
number of measures taking effect today underline the solid
progress New Zealand is making under a Labour-led
government,” Helen Clark said today. “They reflect our
commitment to building a nation which offers fairness and
opportunity, by making investments in health, education,
security for older New Zealanders and infrastructure, and by
meeting new challenges in areas such as trade policy. See...

Suzan Mazur On The Mason’s Mason - Frank Carlucci
I
- The life of Frank Carlucci I has largely escaped public scrutiny, possibly because he's grandfather to one of the knights of the political chessboard -- Carlyle Group’s Frank Carlucci III -- who is not known for being flashy. His talent for secrecy in the Masonic brotherhood, for example, for which he was rewarded with the highest honor: “sublime prince of the royal secret” was no doubt coded somewhere in the Y chromosome passed along to Frank Carlucci III, who has so far served as deputy director of the CIA, secretary of defense and national security adviser, among other trusted appointments. Bill English Launches Nats' Schools Policy
-
National Party Education spokesman Bill English says
National wants a simplified, plain English curriculum for
schools. Mr English launched the party’s schools policy at a
meeting of the Auckland Primary Principals Association this
morning. “When it comes to education ‘less is more’. Great
teaching isn’t about once-over lightly. Great teachers teach
less and do it better,” says Mr English. See... National
