A Week Of It: The Then And Now Of Richard Prebble
Scoop Column: Kevin List writes that when Richard Prebble arrived in Parliament as a Labour Party MP thirty years ago he pointed out the gaps that existed between the wealthy and the poor in New Zealand. Yesterday when Mr Prebble gave his valedictory speech he mysteriously decided to leave the 'inequality of opportunity' out of his saline-soaked farewell. Instead he chose to spend the last part of his speech remembering a fallen soldier who may or may not have been a distant relative. See... A Week Of It: Prebble's Departure, Crying and Shame [1]

It's "We're Out Brothers!" At RNZ
- Staff at Radio New Zealand are stopping work this afternoon to consider their response to a breakdown in their pay talks. The Public Service Association (PSA) represents many RNZ staff, including journalists, librarians, technicians, administration and clerical workers. Together with the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, the PSA has been seeking to negotiate a new collective employment agreement for the last 3 months. PSA Assistant Secretary Jeff Osborne said members want a fair pay offer which reflects the work they have done in recent years to build Radio New Zealand’s audience. See... STATE OF IT Labour's Howard Style Tactics Push Nats On
Backfoot
- Selwyn Manning writes that Labour has revealed a campaign strategy that has an uncanny likeness to that which pulled Australia's Prime Minister John Howard back from the brink of defeat. Here Scoop examines this move and considers how Labour's king-hit tertiary policy is part of a plan to relegate National onto the back-foot. See... Labour Strategy Resembles John Howard Tactics [1]

Polynesia Blue Air Deal Causes Concerns For South Pacific
Governments
- Pacific Insights' John Andrews writes that planned changes for Samoa’s air services have prompted a strategic rethink by airlines and governments in the South Pacific. The pending demise of Polynesian Airlines’ international jet operations in favour of Polynesian Blue, a recently announced joint venture between the Samoan government and Virgin Blue, means other airlines are eyeing consequent opportunities in the region. Considers Time For Intolerance May Be Near -
Many of the migrants coming to New Zealand come from
societies that have no tradition of tolerance or freedom of
speech. On religious matters, they are unwilling to see the
other person's point of view; not prepared to compromise or
to be open to challenge or criticism. The other parties
peddle the old line when we raise concerns about the quality
of immigration into New Zealand. See... The
