The Green Party is issuing a last minute appeal to the Minister of Food Safety Annette King, to allow organic breads to be exempt from mandatory folate fortification requirements, and thus protect consumer choice. A final decision on whether to require the mandatory fortification of all bread with folate will be made by the Ministerial Council of Food Standards Australia/New Zealand in about ten days time. Environment: We Like Fantails!

- The votes are all in and the fantail/piwakawaka is officially New Zealand’s favourite Bird of the Year. Voting in Forest & Bird’s second annual Bird of the Year poll closed on Sunday. - Today's announcement by Pharmac's clinical advisory committee not to fund Herceptin comes as no surprise, says National's Associate Health spokeswoman (Pharmacare), Dr Jackie Blue. - The United Nations General Assembly today elected Belgium, Indonesia, Italy and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms starting 1 January 2007. A fifth non-permanent seat, to be awarded to a member of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States, remains in contention after neither Guatemala nor Venezuela obtained the needed two-thirds majority during 10 rounds of voting today.
