Employment: Govt Announces Plans For Pacific Seasonal Workers
- A new seasonal work scheme will let Pacific workers fill horticulture and viticulture jobs when no New Zealanders are available, say Social Development and Employment Minister David Benson-Pope and Immigration Minister David Cunliffe. "The new Recognised Seasonal Employer policy has been designed to ensure New Zealanders get first opportunities at jobs. Rankin Says Hapu Plans To Withdraw From Treaty
- In a controversial move, the leader of Northland's Matarahurahu hapu, David Rankin, has announced that he will be the first hapu in the country to withdraw from the Treaty of Waitangi. Mr. Rankin's ancestor, Hone Heke, was the first chief in the country to sign the Treaty on 6 February 1840.
