Cullen Preaches Fiscal Discipline For
Kiwi's Own Good
Finance Minister Dr Michael Cullen played down expectations of personal tax cuts today when talking with the media about where the Government intended investing a better than expected tax take. The tax take was up due to higher than expected economic growth. Dr Cullen pointed out that some of the boosted tax take would be needed to fulfil the confidence and supply agreement with United Future to review business tax. The ever-expanding health budget was also a likely source for some of the expanded tax take.
Dr Cullen was at pains to point out that a Labour-led government aimed to provide exceptional social services and kindly assisted some in the press by suggesting their headlines would have the word 'Grinch' inserted to describe his desire for fiscal discipline.
