Heavenly Burlesque Provides Cracking Good
Evening
Scoop Review
Heavenly Burlesque is a multi-act show that romps along in pretty quick succession. If you don't like any of the varied bits then don't worry because they will soon be over. However it would have taken a pretty hard heart to not enjoy chaps dangling from the roof of the Paramount Theatre in Wellington with no safety net just a paying punter likely to break their fall.
The evening's highlight for this humble unco-ordinated reviewer was definitely the hula hoop twirling of Magenta Diamond, closely followed by the rope/sheet twirling skills of Tom Beauchamp and Ms Diamond again who joins Mr Beauchamp in dare-devil exploits midway through the show.
While not too enamoured by the Are You being Served style of Sheba Williams lyrics, her stomping over the seats of the paying punters while dressed in a series of eye-catching outfits, fitted in well with the vaguely naught theme of much of the action. There was also more naughtiness from another of the Burlesque team involving grinding into a supermarket trolley which quite frankly looked painful.
If one had to pick a favourite character then it was the everyman host for the evening Mr Vinyl Burns with his ridiculous fake Southern Accent and ability to mess up some stunts while occasionally making the audience gasp while successfully completing others.
If one was to be a pedant then the playing of the Hell Pizza/Advert promo seemed a bit like well an advert. However if these noble characters that populate the Burlesque of Heaven/Hell to continue to earn a crust through such means then it is a small price to pay for the rest of the whip-cracking hula hoop action on display to a very happy audience at the Paramount Theatre.
