A Candle Lights Gaza's Night Awaiting Martyrdom
A Candle Lights Gaza's Night Awaiting Martyrdom
By Genevieve Cora Fraser
Cold hands
reach
To a candle for warmth
Against the frigid
reality
Of the calamity
About to befall
Israel
demands
Extermination
Of resistance
To Palestine's
fate
Children huddle
A mother prays
The whole
world
Watches
But who
Will be saved?
Breath
hovers like vapor
From the freshly martyred
Dead
pulses with fear
As thoughts race
Ahead
Assembled
at the crossing
Israeli tanks amass
Determined to gain
ground
Pummel and ransack
Martyr
Brigades take
places
In a matrix of self defense
Against an
Archenemy
For sixty years
Entrenched
Hunger and
deprivation
Isolated in refugee camps
Imprisoned by a
Western world
Judgmental
As they connive
Against
Arab streets
In rubble ripped apart
Buildings
flattened and charred
Hundreds slaughtered
Thousands
wounded
Hamas fighters shoulder on
Defenders of
heritage
Land and rights
Against the odds
Homemade
rockets flare
As Israeli guided missiles
Take
flight
Trigger fingers
Flex and wait
Cold
comfort
In a living hell
On this
Gaza's darkest
night
