National Front against the coup d'état
COMUNICADO No.5 - National Front against the coup d'état
translated by Julie Webb-Pullman
Due to the crisis provoked by the coup, The National Front Against the Coup d'état, composed of different organizations in Honduras, informs the rest of the population of its clearly stated position on the principles that have governed, and continue to govern the Popular Movement determined to transform this society so the majority of the country enjoy well-being, inclusion and non-discrimination. In this sense, we communicate:
That the entire country is mobilized, from communities to municipalities, Departments and regions, adopting totally pacifist actions like municipal sit-ins, demonstrations and other forms of expressing condemnation against the government coup that installed the oligarchy through their pawns under the direction of the legislature, judiciary and executive.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, OAS, Mr. José Miguel Insulza, met yesterday with various players in the country, candidates of the Liberal and National Party, the Cardinal, the Supreme Court and the Public Prosecutor. Moments afterwards he said they do not recognize that they have violated the institutional order, and stating that the OAS is clear that what happened in Honduras is a coup d'etat and also that they broke the institutional order, therefore the OAS does not recognize the coup government of Mr Micheletti.
The withdrawal of Honduras from the OAS has serious consequences for the majority of the population of the country, it represents 80% of the medicine, food, fuel and other things coming from other countries, and as if that were not enough, all the resources such as loans, grants, donations and other things will not be arriving. Those who are not concerned about leaving the OAS are business people, those with economic and political power, and some have already left.
The rest of the country's population is maintaining actions of peaceful resistance from wherever they find themselves, saying that no matter what happens this July 4th, the battle is for respect for democratic institutions, and for transformation into a more inclusive, just and equitable society
We cannot rely on an electoral process that has lost its validity, managed and driven by those who, from whatever way you look at it, have usurped power through armed force but are trying to claim that they have done it by legal means. We now urge the international community not to support or validate an election in these circumstances, of which they are well aware.
