The Thursday Wire Hosted By Hamish Fletcher

At 12:15 we’re going over concerns over the provocation defence following calls from Justice Minister Simon Power to have it scrapped in the wake of the Clayton Weatherston case. For those who haven’t been keeping up to date, Weatherson tried to get off the charge of murdering his former girlfriend Sophie Elliot, claiming he was provoked. Not everyone thinks removing this defence is a good idea and one such voice of dissent comes from lawyer Chris Comesky who is joining me on the show to discuss his concerns surrounding this issue.

Then at 12:40 I’ll play an interview I did this morning with the Executive Director of Oxfam New Zealand Barry Coates about agreements and talks currently in the works between countries housing major drug companies which are trying to enforce patents and intellectual property rights on generic medicines. This, in effect, is an attempt to gain a monopoly on these medicines and set high prices which many in the developing world (those who are in dire need of these drugs) can’t afford.

Following this at 13:00, I’ll be speaking to Australian photographer and digital artist Alexia Sinclair, one of the speakers attending Semi Permanent, the design event happening in Auckland on the 14th and 15th of August. Alexia has a prestigious background, and is the recipient of numerous awards. She’ll be going into her work and what is involved in her art, and I’ll ask her what she has in store for the audience at Semi Permanent.

Then at 1:15 I read out all your correspondence that’s come in over the show so far. I urge you all to get involved. You can reach me on 309 3879, text me on 5395 or email studio[at]95bfm.com.

Coming up at 1:30, after a brief hiatus, Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre is back for “Dear Science”, your weekly look at science and technology on the Thursday Wire. This week we’re talking about GM food and Peter recent visit and experience with genetic modified foodstuffs, as well as this, Peter will run over the tech spin offs following the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Then at 1:45 Pennie Papercuts is in review yet another publication, this week’s its New Zealand Memories. So to keep up to date with hot shit off the news stand, tune in for that.

Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
