1220 - Sue Bradford on Beneficiary Audit
I'm hoping to hear from Green Party Social Development Spokesperson Sue Bradford around 1220 - but it's a busy day for her so fingers crossed. She's been very critical of the government's decision to audit the 50 or so beneficiaries that are taking in the largest amount of money from their welfare payments. Social Development Minister Paula Bennett, who declined an invitation to come on the programme, says it's about taxpayers being confident they're getting "value for money" - whatever that means.
1240 - GST Rise - Prof Craig Elliffe
At twelve forty I'll be speaking with (above) from Auckland University's Business School about the increasingly real prospect of raisingGST in this country. The government's Tax Working group have suggested the move as an option to help boost the coffers - they say it's quick, easy and won't have negative effects when takenover a long period of time. Is this right? What about those on low incomes - the working poor? Chuck 'em the benefit seems to be the solution from the advisory group.
1300 - US Health - Igor Volsky, Health Care Researcher: Centre for American Progress
At one we wade into the health reform debate that's bringing America to its knees. I spoke earlier today with (above) - which bills itself as "a think tank dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action." Igor was very well informed, and help clarify what's been a pretty murky issue in my mind. So if you've been wondering why peopleover there are getting so riled up over the prospect of universal health care - communism! - then tune in for this one.
1320 - Counterclockwise - Gordon Campbell on Afghanistan's Marital Rape Law
Counterclockwise as per at twenty past one today. A special guest today too - Gordon Campbell will be on the line to have a chat about his latest piece up on scoop regarding Afghanistan's Marital Rape Law and how it affects our SAS redeployment there. The issue was a hot topic in Parliament yesterday too - with the opposition saying it makes our role in that particular war "unjustifiable"
1340 - Catherine McHattie, from "Sexual Perversity In Chicago"
Then at one forty I'll be joined in the studio by (above) who's performing in a play called (above) that started last night at theMusgrove Theatre (formerly the Maidment). Davit Marmet wrote the play, and he's the brains behind Glengarry Glenross. In yer face theatre of the highest order.
