A Bigger Laugh For John Key

A Bigger Laugh For John Key

We´re a little concerned about John Key going on the Letterman Show. The problem is partly political risk: if something bad happens back here while the PM is gunning for cheap laughs on an American chat show there could be trouble. And Letterman isn´t all that funny. So here are 10 American genuinely funny comedies our PM should have gone for:

10. The Simpsons - He could get Lisa to explain how the latest ETS will actually work. No-one else understands it.

9. Seinfield - If Kramer isn´t available, we could just see Key skidding in the door, saying as how he´d discovered this neat new way of running a government.

8. That ´70s Show. Decade of Deficits, anyone?

7. MASH: Key plays a wounded soldier who pleads to be sent back to the front line rather than face any more Treasury briefings.

6. Cheers: Key enjoys a beer with Norm and tells Cliff there is a bloke back in NZ, called Peter Dunne, who is a lot like him.

5: Happy Days: Key gets the Fonz to teach him how to go "heey".

4: Home Improvement: Appears on Tool Time, persuades Al to drop the flannel shirts and wear Icebreaker gear; quizzes Wilson about Obama´s fiscal policy.

3: Hogan´s Heroes: Key plays a Kiwi airman on the run: Hogan is on the verge of getting him out when Key mistakes Colonel Klink for Don Brash and it all goes horribly wrong.

2: Everybody Loves John!

1.(and a big thanks to our friends in the Labour Research Unit for this one) : Scooby Doo - With Key´s mask peeled off at the end to reveal he is Ruth Richardson, snarling "and I would have gotten away with it if it wasn´t for you pesky kids..."

While this all good fun, John Key is doing a terrific job in New York, and there could be some genuine benefits for NZ such as a research and development programme for agricultural emissions which the Obama Government has agreed to help fund.

This is the type of win we like to see from the overseas visits of our top politicians - and Key looks like he´s enjoying every minute of his time at the top table.
