The Thursday Wire Hosted By Hamish Fletcher

At 12:15 I’ll play an interview I did with Green Party co-leader Metira Turei this morning over her party’s opposition to the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill. This Bill is one which will give police the ability to take DNA from criminal suspects without a court order, one which Turei believes places too much power in the hands of officers on the beat

Then at 12:30 I’ve got Penny Bright on the phone, a campaigner against the privatization of water, responding to an announcement today from Local Government Minister Rodney Hide who wants to extend the 15-year limit on water-service contracts to 35 years and allow companies to build, own and operate new water and wastewater treatment plants during the contract period. Penny is strongly against the move and I’ll try to test some of the Government’s argument against her.

At 13:00 I’m speaking to Andrew Little the National Secretary for the Engineering, Manufacturing and Print Union. We’ll be discussing the Government’s Employment Relations (Rest Breaks and Meal Breaks) Amendment Bill (a piece of legislation which seeks to make break and meal times in the workplace more flexible) and just what it means for workers.

Then at 13:30 it’s time for Dear Science with Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre in Wellington. This week we’ll be over the science of the new DNA law, options for drivers after the cell phone in vehicles ban comes into effect this weekend.

Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
