On the show today:
1215: I'll play an interview I did this morning with Pem Bird spokesperson from a group of 16 kura kaupapa schools who have accused NZQA of being biased against kura kaupapa Maori, kura-a-iwi and other Maori medium type schools who choose the reo rangatira NCEA option to teach their students. In the NCEA system there currently exists two different courses in te reo Maori, and one is far more difficult, and in Mr. Bird's words, more "authentic", than the other. Mr. Bird wants to see the reo rangatira option worth more NCEA credits, as the simpler course is taught primarily in English rather than Maori. He claims, as you'll hear, that te reo Maori language courses are not being treated in the same way as English/ESOL and is campaigning to have this rectified.
1230: I'm speaking with Alison Lane from Maritime New Zealand who is part of a New Zealand delegation at an Antarctic Conference happening in Wellington today discussing the problems that can arise from tourists charters travelling to Antarctica. You may remember in 2007 the vessel The Explorer sank 120km off the Antarctic coast, only one out of four serious incidents involving tourist ships in the area in the past three years. Following these incidents, Antarctic experts from a range of countries are meeting to go over ways in which procedures and rules can be enacted to try to limit the environmental and human harm that shipwrecks in Antarctica can cause. I'll ask Alison to go over the issues being tabled at the Wellington conference today.
1300: I'm joined on the phone by Paul Norris, head of the New Zealand Broadcasting School in Christchurch, about TVNZ losing it's public charter and what this means for Television New Zealand as an organization and for broadcasting in New Zealand in general. TVNZ received its charter in 2002 from Labour which required it to broadcast a wide range of programmes for all groups in New Zealand. However, Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman introduced a bill yesterday to repeal the charter which media commentators, including Norris, believe will see TVNZ turn into a purely private commercial broadcaster.
1330: Dear Science with Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre in Wellington. Today we'll be covering the "Danish Text" debacle that's erupted in Copenhagen, where it seems developed countries are trying to hijack the climate conference to support their own interests.
1340: It's time for Papercuts with Pennie Blair, now proudly brought to you by the good people at Mag Nation. Papercuts is a feature where Pennie reviews a different magazine each week and today she'll be scrutinizing Spanish fashion mag "Paper Planes". Listen in to see how many papercuts Pennie thinks it deserves.
Podcasts of all interviews and features will available from the 95bfm website following the show.
