1220 - Education Minister Anne Tolley

At 1220 we'll hear from the elusive Minister of Education Anne Tolley. I spoke to her this morning about a report, release today, undertaken by the Education Review Office (or ERO) - the government's education watchdog. It was pretty critical of the way schools are teaching reading and writing to kids in their first 2 years of school - nearly a third of teachers had little or no sense of the importance of developing confidence in these skills at this age. And, only one in five principals set expectations that promoted high reading and writing achievement levels in the first two years. MsTolley says the report highlights the need for the implementation of national standards - which will assess pupils from years 1 to 8 in reading, writing and maths. You've got to wonder about the timing of the release though - coming in a week which has seen the minister threaten to SACK boards at schools that boycott the standards. Coincidence?

1240 - Len Brown

At 1240 super-mayor hopeful, and current mayor of Manukau Len Brown joins us to discuss his call to lower the spending cap for super-city campaigning. Right now, it's set at $580,000 - but Brown says this will lead to funding scandals like the whole exclusive brethren fiasco during the 2005 general election. Instead he wants to see a cap of between $150,000 to $200,000 - and has called on the other mayors to join him. Sounds pretty reasonable, but is it possible?

1300 - ERMA annual report on 1080 aerial drops - Andrea Eng - General Manager of Hazardous Substances

At one we're hoping to hear from (above) to talk about their annual report into the aerial use of 1080 poison. A hot-button topic if ever there was one, ERMA did the report as part of the tighter management and control of 1080 they recommended back in 2007. So how are we doing? Is there cause for the kind of concern that's seen anti-1080 campaign groups pop up all over rural New Zealand?

1320 - Counterclockwise
